'Council supports Via rail fighters The passenger group fight- ing the Via rail closing between Havelock and Toronto got another ally 'Monday afternoon when Scugog Township council passed a resolution in favour of keeping the line in opera- tion. : The resolution, which was passed unanimously by council, calls for the federal government through Via Rail to keep up the service, or have the Ontario govern- ment include the line in its Go train system. Scugog Mayor Taylor will present the council's resolution at a special meeting this Wednes- day (August 19) in Peter- Jerry borough of a committee of MP's under the direction of Don Mazankowski, former Transport Minister for the Conservatives. . The closing of the Via line from Havelock to Toronto has led to a storm of protest by those who use the daily train, and a group headed by Les Parkes of Port Perry says it will fight to keep the line open. Municipal governments in areas affected by the announced closing have been throwing = their support behind the groups who want to keep the lines open, and there was a rally in Port Perry last Sunday afternoon. (see separate story) Will study purchase of Works Depot Scugog Township just might be interested in buy- ing the Durham Region Works depot in Manchester, if the price is right. Council Monday afternoon at first expressed little © interest in buying the site, but Regional - councillor Lawrence Malcolm sug- gested that at least the Township should find out what the Region's _ asking price is. Councillor Malcolm point- ed out that Durham may sell the site cheap in light of the fact it has a restrictive zon- ing on it, and any change in. the zoning would require a by-law from Scugog council.
