Via Train group to advertise Does advertising increase business? The passenger group fighting to keep the Via train from Toronto to Havelock on the rails will soon find out as it takes the unusual step of placing newspaper ads in an effort to increase the number of people using the line. "We are amazed at the number of people who are not aware that the train operates each day to Toronto," said Les Parkes, president of the Toronto- Havelock Passenger Assoc- iation, the group which has been waging a battle for more than a month to get the federal government to change the plan to discon- tinue the service next summer, Rain not effecting farm crops The incessant rains of the past week or so have brought farming operations in this area to a halt, but should not have any long range detri- mental affects, says the provincial agriculture rep for Scugog and Uxbridge. Ivan Bell told the Star last Friday that virtaully all the farmers in this area have harvested their spring grain crops of mixed barley and oats, and the same is true for hay. "Farms in the area are not really in bad shape because of the rain, and everything should be all right as soon as the weather clears," he said. But last week farmers were unable to put heavy machinery to work on the fields to prepare for planting of fall wheat. ~ The damp weather is causing fungus problems for commercial vegetable crops in the Newmarket-Holland Marsh area, but Mr. Bell says there are no large scale vegetable growers in Scugog or Uxbridge Townships. However, back yard gardeners are going to notice that their tomatoes especially are not ripening because of the lack of -sun- shine and the heavy moisture will cause skins to split making tomatoes vulnerable to fungus growths. Mr. Bell says that farmers in this area report hay and spring grain yields are about average, and there have been a few farms this year reporting excellent yields. He adds that corn, the major field crop, is looking good this season, and farmers will probably start taking corn silage by about the second week in Sept- ember, if the fields are dry enough. PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 Mr. Parkes said the ads will be placed in newspapers in communities - served by the Via train starting this week, and they are designed to tell the public where the train stops. He noted that Via has done nothing to promote increased ridership on the train through public rela- tions and advertising. The ads will carry the Via logo, and because they are GRADUATION On July 10, 1981, Sandy Murdock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Murdock, Port Perry, received her Registered Nurse's Diploma from George Brown College - Toronto. Sandy will reside in Calgary, Alberta where she will begin her nursing career. not authorized by the company, there might be some legal problems." However, the passenger association is counting on Via not to order the ads stopped because that would create further bad publicity. In other developments to keep the service in operation Mr. Parkes said the Associa- tion will be meeting Sept- ember 21 in Ottawa with Anthony Pollard, assistant to transport minister Jean Luc Pepin who ordered the Havelock-Toronto service discontinued as part of a nation-wide cutback in pass- enger lines. At this meeting, the Asso- Buckel or pay It's a proven fact that seat. belts save lives. Any motorist in Ontario found not wearing a seat belt can be charged and fined $28 for the first offense, and the provincial solicitor-general's office has informed police forces across Ontario that seat belt laws should be more strictly enforced. Staff-Sgt. John Kay of Durham Police 26 Division said last week that officers have not been specifically instructed to wage a seat belt campaign, but they have ciation will present a formal brief outlining why it feels the train service should stay in operation and a list of proposals for improving the service and increasing use by the public. One of the main points the Association has been making in its fight to keep the train * on the tracks is that the 1980 revenue figure supplied to the federal transport minister appears to be $100,000 less than it should be based on the number of riders last year. The group also feels that more people would use the train if there was better advertising locally by Via. Up... up! been made aware of the solicitor-general's directives that the law be strictly enforced. He said that on one day last week, there were | several seat belt cha laid in Port Perry 4nd Uxbridge, and officefs on radar duty will be checking for seat belts as well.
