And they did it in convine- ing fashion with a solid: 9-3 thrashing of the Port Hope Panthers. ~ Although 'the game was close for two periods, MoJacks exploded for. six goals in the final frame, taking complete control with a high powered offensive attack led by the line of Tim Thompson, Todd Wilbur and Brian Mikkelson. This trio combined for 16 points with Wilbur netting four goals and two assists, Thompson three goals and three assists and Mikkelson four assists. Ray Gibson had another excellent game between the pipes, especially in the first period when- he blocked 20 shots and kept his team in: the game. And the club got some timely penalty killing during a five minute major in the second to Mike Mitchell. Keeping Port Hope off the score board during this five minutes was probably the turning point of the game as the score was tied at two at .the time, and if the Panthers had popped a couple of goals the complexion of the match could have been different. The Panthers came out flying in the first period and tested Gibson on several occasions before the MoJacks could get a decent shot on goal. Panthers Gord Lewis gave his team a 1-0 lead at the seven minute mark, cashing in a two on one break by flipping in a rebound off the back-boards. MoJacks got that one back with a couple minutes left in the first as Thompson took a pass from Wilbur and scored from the slot area. At 2:40 of the second, Panthers again went ahead when Shawn Wakely found the range as MoJacks were having trouble getting the puck out of their zone. This was one of the few times during the game MoJacks ran into difficulty in their zone, as most of the time the defense was able to clear the puck. : Thompson with his secon of the night knotted the score at two after five minutes of the second on a bang-bang play. Mikkelson slapped a pass from behind the Panther net and Thompson slapped it home before Port Hope goalie Jamie Highfield could move. NE MoJacks finally got. the go-ahead goal at 14:12 of the second when Wilbur. batted the -puck in during a - scramble in the Panther goal crease. Port Hope defense- man Jamie Carr was doing time for hooking when Wilbur scored. : Nursing that slim one goal lead in the third, Wilbur made it 4-2 at 2:34 when he made a couple of nice' moves "in front of the crease and - then slid a back-hand to the low. corner. . ; Bob Wildema put MoJacks three up at 4:15 with the teams five aside as he blasted a hard shot from the right which caught the inside of the post. And just over a minute 'later with MoJacks on the power play, Thompson made it 6-2 with a hard shot from Ko ke Ro AAR RIE a nd NRE NAN Le 1 BE CE RAL 1 the right side. Panthers got their final goal at the 12 minute mark with Lewis standing all alone on Gibson's door-step and flipping the puck into the net. But the MoJacks were not through as defenseman Charlie Brown ripped a shot from 20 feet after faking once to put the Panther goalie off balance. Mike Albrecht and Jeff Johnstone drew assists on this goal. The neatest goal of the night came off the stick of Wilbur who was 'set up cleanly in front on passes from Thompson and Mikkel- son. All Wilbur had to do was guide the puck across the red line. Adding insult to injury, MoJacks scored their final of the game with 40 seconds left while playing shorthanded. Wilbur was again set up by Thompson, and after a little head fake he was staring at .an open net. Although the scoring punch came from one line, the victory was a team effort, as the game was close for the first 40 minutes. The players seem to understand what the words hustle and back-check: mean and the defensive corps is starting to play with confidence. It was a clean contest with nine minors to Port Hope and 11'to the Mo Jacks. The only skirmish came late in the game when burly Mike Mitchell easily wrestled Terry Highfield to the ice. Speedy . Dave Canning played his usual game of perpetual motion, and Tony Oxley is proving to be tough in the corners and a pesky forechecker. Although this was the team's 'first win, MoJacks have shown a lot of promise in their last three outings, and the convincing victory 'Sunday night should put a lot of confidence in the MoJack players. yg n On "Wednesday, October 14, the team dropped a 4-1 'game in Rice Lake to the Rangers. - A triple minor penalty in the third period to Scott heard disrupted the momentum of the team.
