PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., November 25, 1981 -- 17 Atoms tie Pickering, lose to Beaverton by M. Leatherdale On Friday, Nov. 20th, the Malmont Farm Atoms hosted Pickering Village, they have now played each team in the Lakeshore Div at least once. End to end play made a fast and exciting first period, both goalies making excellent saves. Control of the puck in Picker- ing end earned Mike Sorley an assist on Ports first goal, when Daryl Leatherdale shot from the corner scoring on a deflection off the goalies pads. One minute later, Pickerings goalie made a super save on a shot from Jeff Mills, but Matt Durward was right on the spot to pick up the rebound, giving Port a 2-0 lead. The second period was scoreless, and the boys continued to play well, unfortunately early in the third period, the Green Machines lost their hockey concentration and not playing like they did in the first and second periods, Pickering soon retaliated with two very quick goals. Unable to score but succeed- ing in holding Pickering off the scoreboard, ended in a 2-2 tie. Sunday, Nov. 22nd, the game the . Green Machines travelled to Beaverton, for a return exhibition game. Beaverton proved they were ready for them this game, as they out- skated and outplayed Port in every period. Although we had an early 2-0 lead on goals by Daryl Leatherdale and: Jarett Harman, with Mike" Sorley, Eric Grosvenor and Matt Durward picking up the assists, they could not contain the strong playing of the Beaverton team, who tied the game early in the second period. Mike Sorley assisted by Daryl Leather- dale put Port ahead 3-2 half- way through the second, but again Beaverton came back to tie, and finally got the winning goal early in the third. Chris and Ryan worked hard between the pipes, or the score would have been much higher. Hopefully the boys will play better hockey when they meet Stouffville on Wednesday night. Sports activities at P. P. High School by Kevin Harris Basketball The Port Perry High School girls basketball teams hosted the Central girls last week. The seniors were the only team to come away victorious. SENIORS The senior Rebels played one of their strongest games of the year. The first quarter was a well controlled eight minutes. The girls come away with a 14-9 edge. In the second period Port' played even with the Redman. The half ended 22-14 in favour of Port. The third quarter and the entire second half was dominated entirely by the Port girls. The girls played tremendous defence and chalked up 22 points in the third quarter while allowing only five. This was not the same team the seniors had lost to the week before, or was it? The girls needed to win this game to give them a good shot at the L. 0S. S.A. finals. The final score was Port 63, Central 25. Port Senior's top point getter was guard Jennifer Simmonds who hooped in 17 points. Barb Elliott popped in 16 points while Kira Cope had a good game and scored 14 points. Kelly Kasper shot in 6 points while Melanie Bruce, Teri Henderson, Heather McDougall and" Rhonda White all contributed a basket each. Anna Khindoch scored 15 points. The girls will now host Bowmanville in the semi: finals of L.0.S.S.A. East this week. The team ended their regular season play in second spot behind Eastdale. Final score 63-25. MIDGETS h The midget girls had a good first half against their opposition central. The first quarter was a strong effort by both squads. The buzzer sounded and the scoreboard read 8-8. In the second quarter the teams played defensive basketball. The half time score was 12-11 in Port Perry's favour. Central continued to play strong defence throughout the rest of the contest allowing only two and six points in the third and fourth quarters the game ended 30-19. The girls played courage- ously in the loss. Kelly Raines was the midget "Rebel's top scorer with 7 points. Heidi Spann- bauer scored 6 points as Janice Jackman and Janet Simmonds shot in 4 and 2 points respectively. The loss to Central was marked the girls final game of the year. . The team was: tied for fourth but unfortunatly were put out of the playoff picture because of points for and against. The girls had a good season and are to be congra- tulated on their fine spirit and play. Final score Port 19, Central 30. JUNIORS The Junior Rebels like the midgets lost after a disap- pointed game. The girls fell behind drastically in the first quarter which énded 22-4. The 18 point margin was too big for the squad to make up against the first place Central team. The half time score was 30-14, all Central. The girls played even throughout the rest of the game but came up short of the first quarter deficit. The final score was a disap- pointed 54-33. Top scorer of the day for the Rebel teams was Sophia Brendon who ended the game with 21 points. Judy Brinkman hooped in two baskets for a total of 4 points. There were four players who scored a basket each; Jackie Abraham, Kelly Steele, Angie Dickinson and Shawn Muir. The Central top point getter of the day was junior Michele Doucet with 22 points. The juniors will be playing at Eastdale this week. If either the Seniors or Juniors win their respective semi- final games they will then travel to Durham College for the L.0.S.S.A. semi finals and finals. We wish both teams good luck in their contests ahead. Novice trounce Pickering by Linda Parry On Friday November 20 the Novice J. T. Pearce Auctioneers won an easy victory against Pickering Village. Port's goal tender Shawn Larocque and Noel Lovering counted the shutout with very little work as shot on net were 38-5 in favour of Port. Jan Heyes opened the scoring with a fine show of puck handling, the assist going to Mark Andrews. In the second period Port chalked up 4 more goals, the first one being credited to Jason Cochrane assisted again by Mark Andrews. Chris Forder then made a beautiful pass to the open winger Jason Towns who brokeaway and got out maneuvered the goalie. Jeff Parry then recorded the next goal on an unassisted effort. Pickering goalie had a real problem when Mark Andrews blasted the next goal at him and he made the save but lost sight of the bouncing puck and it flicked over the top of his stick. In the' third period, Jan Heyes got his second goal of the night with the assist going to Jason Cochrane. The last goal of the night was off the stick of Mike Feasby on a pass from Jeff Parry and the game closed at a resounding 7-0 victory for the Auctioneers. The boys will be seeing lots of action this week in two exhibition games along with a league game. Stones drop home gamé defeat Sunderland away * by Doreen Kendall Back to back games with Sunderland saw the Geo Stone Realators coming in with a win and a loss. Nov. 17 saw "The Stones" in Sunderland where they wound up on the short end of the one to nothing score. This appeared to be the night when our boys just couldn't get their act together. Special mention must be made of the superb job Stacey Ballingall did between the pipes. Well done Stace!! it could have been 5, zip but for you!! The home game on Satur- day Nov. 21st the boys ere in full gear and went o St and stomped on Sunderlan This was a team effort all the "with 2 big goals, way. Scoring the goals for Port: Steve Cgnnors 2 goals and an assist, Mike Gibson Craig Venning a goal and an assist, Blair Bailey and Rob Brown with single' markers. Calvin Brewster, up from House League picked up an assist as did regulars, Tim Allsopp, Chris Skura, and Rob Jamieson. Mark Kendall played well in the net to round off a full team effort. Well Done Boys. Sorry to report Stacey Ballingall and Jamie Cannon out of the line up, we sin¢€rely hope these boys will soon be back with us.
