Recommends 12 years Secondary Education Education Minister Dr. Bette Stephenson said last week that the Ministry will decide early in the new year what action will be taken on the recommendations of the Secondary Education Re- view Project. The Project's report recommended that the school program in Ontario be reorganized on the basis of 12 rather than 13 years. A single diploma awarded to graduating students would replace the present Grade 12 and Grade 13 diplomas. The Steering Committe, under the chairmanship of Duncan Green, former Dir- ector of Education for the Toronto Board of Education also recommended in- creasing the number of compulsory credits in sub- jects such as languages, science, the arts and phy- sical and health education programs. It also rec- ommeds that the secondary schools put more emphasis on programs oriented to the world of work. The report strongly emphasizes that the implementation of its proposals for a re- organized program will re- quire a higher degree of coordination among the var- ious sectors and levels of the provincial education. It also urges a far greater involve- ment of the business and industrial sectors of the Ont- ario community in the development and im- plementation of education policies. The report suggests that its recommendations, if accepted, be phased into the' system throughout the 1960's, "The objectives detailed in the recommendations of the Secondary Education Re- view Project will be studied in relationship to the other components of the ed- ucational system to ensure that they function as a Bridge. If on critical exam- ination we find that the recommendations will im- prove the learning ex- perience of young people within our secondary school system, there is no doubt in my mind that the principles contained in the Secondary Education Review Project will be supported," Dr. Stephenson. Mr. Green said that the reorganization of the system into 12 years should not result in the loss of teaching jobs because, under the Re- port's recommendations, students will be required to spend more time with the classroom teacher.
