Ontario Trans- portation and Communica- tions Minister James Snow reported last week. Said Snow: "It's encour- aging to see that the number of snowmobile fatalities have stabilized, remaining at 23, from the 78-79 high of 38, but I'm concerned about the rise in injuries last winter. Of the 23 snowmobilers killed - 16 died in on-road collisions and seven in off- road accidents. But personal injuries rose to 513 from 433. "The increase in injuries reflects a corresponding in- crease in the number of collisions,'"' he said, "as accident statistics indicate a 17 per cent increase - 673 collisions compared to 575 the previous-season." A breakdown shows that a ~ majority of the 1980-81 snow- mobile collisions also took place on highways and roads, 348 (51.7 per cent) compared to 325 off-road (48.3 per cent). . There was a significant decrease in drownings with only four snowmobilers drowned compared to 13 in the winter of 1979-80. However, Snow cautioned snowmobile owners about letting 'underage or unlicensed drivers operate snowmobiles on roadways. He observed that 19 per cent of drivers involved in on- road collisions. -didn't hold either a valid driver's licence or motorized snow vehicle operator's permit. "In addition, of 71 un- licensed drivers involved, in on-road collisions, 40 were under the age of 16, and one was under 12" said Snow. "This is why we strongly endorse snowmobile training courses offered by the Ontario Federation of Snow- mobile Clubs." "Snow further encouraged snowmobile owners and drivers to show the same degree of responsibility when driving snowmobiles as they do when driving family cars. "Snowmobiles aren't toys. They are motorized vehicles and, as such, drivers should obey the rules of the road. We .don't want to spoil anyone's enjoyment, but speeding, drinking or care- less operation can only result in tragedy," he concluded. Pearce Auctioneers played a solid game against. the Oshawa Red Wings and came up with a 3 - 3 tie. Oshawa scored two goals in the first period and it looked like Port was really going to have their hands full. But Jason Towns of the Auctioneers took aim and flashed one in the corner with the assist going to Greg Fitzgerald and Port started their challenge. Jeff Parry of Port scored on a face-off won by Greg Fitzgerald. The high shot deflected off an Oshawa players stick and made the Oshawa goalie defenseless. - Ports Scott Menzies blasted one'into the corner off a pass from the stick of Mike Feasby and put Port in the "lead 3 - 2. Oshawa scored the tying goal with 2 minutes left in the second period. With 14 seconds left in the final . period Port was penalized a two man penalty. It looked grim for the boys, but the Oshawa team TShis.......... $1.00 Off By Girls Overall Sets . . . . .. .. $2.00 off #42 Ladies Ladies - 2 Size Dress Pants Dresses $5.00 Off | $4.00 Off A 0 igner J Ladies O/S re [pedals eg s5 00 Off | $5.00 Off $5.00 Off Ladies Oversize | PAJAMAS... $1.00 OFF.
