0-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., December 16, 1981 PPHS basketball teams off to rocky start by Kevin Harris Basketball The Port Perry High chool boys basketball :ams began their regular eason in Pickering. All ree squads were defeated. Seniors The Senior Rebels were own throughout all of the ame. Pickering had a 16 - 6 'ad in the first quarter and a i - 19 lead at the half. Todd Wilbur lead Port with 18 points. Peter Stone bank- ed in 15 points. The two guards Scott Wallace and Kevin Harris added eight and six points respectively. Paul Van Camp ended out the scoring with a basket. Juniors Port's junior team played well throughout most of the contest against the strong Pickering squad. The boys had a lead of 6 - 4 at the sound of the first buzzer. The Pickering team pia ahead at the half 22 - After a close third a Port was tied at 35. Pickerings height and experience came through in the final period. Port was beaten 51 - 39. } Top point getter was Port's guard Rob Burnett, who shot in 24 points. Stan Glass banked in 5 points in the losing cause. Mark Phillips and Dean Stone contributed 4 points each as Ken Elliott hooped in a basket. The midgets played surprisingly well in their first game of the year. The Pickering team had a very large squad of boys. Port had not even played on a full court until game time. The team was down 12 to 10 at the first quarter buzzer. They were ahead by one, 21 - 20 at half time. In the third period the Rebels fell behind by eight and never came back from the deficit. The final score was Port Perry 35, Pickering 42. The big difference in the game was Port's Vaughan McKee who scored 22 points in his very first game ever. Manvers Hockey TEAM G.P. Sam McCreight scored 6 points as Darryl Musselman and Mark Butters put 5 and 2 points on the score board respectively. G.L. ROBERTS The Port Rebels travelled to G.L.Roberts last Thurs- day Dec. 10. - All three teams played well and the midgets came away with a win, Midgets Port Perry took the lead "and never looked back. In the first quarter the midgets were winning 9 - 6. The Rebels opened it up in the second period - had a comanding 25 - 12 lead. Port's rebounding and shooting downed the Roberts team 55 - 32. Vaughan McKee lead all scorers in the game with a career high 30 points. Sam McCreight banked in 7 points in the winning effort as Darryl Musselman, Paul Bateman and Mark Butters contributed 6 points a piece. Final score Port - 55, G.L. Roberts - 32. Juniors The junior boys basketball team played an outstanding defensive game. They held the tough G.L. Roberts team to 24 points the entire game. Unfortunately Roberts held the Rebels to a mere 19 points. Both teams lacked offence. Rob Burnett lead the Port scoring with 6 points. Dean Stone played a good game and hooped in 5 points. Mark Goreski, Mark Phillips, Stan - Glass, and Ken Elliott all contributed 2 points each. G.L. G.L. took a first quarter lead of 13 - 6. The half ended 27°- 20 in favour of Roberts. The Rebels played sub-par ball in the third period which ended 44 - 26 Roberts. by M. Leatherdale On Dec. 11th, the Malmont Farm Atom A's continued their winning streak by defeating Port Hope 6 - 2. Four goals were scored in the first period, the first by Daryl Leatherdale, assisted by Clair Cornish, Seventeen seconds later Jarett Harman gave Port a 2 - 0 lead on his unassisted goal. Port Hope retaliated with one goal, but Eric Grosvenor and Daryl Leatherdale assisted Clair Cornish to give the Green Machines a 3 - 1 lead. Jeff Mills assisted by Jarett Harman started the scoring in the second period, and later added his second of the game, Excellent penalty kill- ing allowed Port Hope only one goal, while Port was serving a five minute hook- ing penalty. Clair Cornish finished off the scoring with his second of the game, with Eric Grosvenor picking up the assist. Our next home game will be on Fri. Dec. 18th at 8 o'clock against Uxbridge. Plan to attend, and see the Green Machines in action. Port staged a good fourth quarter and until the final minutes of the game it was . close. Roberts came out the victor 60 - 40. Peter Stone lead the scor- ing and rebounding with 12 and 7 respectively. Scott Wallace shot in 10 points with Tournament On Sat. Dec, 12th, the Malmont Farm Atoms met Sutton in the first game of the Oak Ridges Touurna- ment. Sutton were out for revenge in this game after loosing to Port last week- end. Both teams played extremely well, and it was either teams game, right down to the final second. The only goal of the game was scored by Sutton in the scond period, although Port outshot Sutton, they could not get one in the net. With just over one minute left in the game, our goalie was pulled in favour of six attackers, Sutton picked up a tripping 'penalty, and with six against four, The Green Machines were still unable to score to force a overtime period. The Atoms played their second game of the day against Bracebridge, and this one proved even more exciting than the morning game against Sutton. The first and second periods were scoreless and the plav NEW YEAR'S EVE CLUB ANNRENE CONC. 10 WEST, SCUGOG ISLAND, PORT PERRY (Beside Goreski's Summer Resort) a good game. Kevin Harris banked in 8 points and lead in assists with five. Pete Christie scored 6 points while Todd Wilbur and John Butler swished a basket each. _ All three teams play at O'Neil this week. Atoms lose nail-biters was continually going from end to end, both goalies were outstanding. It was not until the third period that Eric Grosvenor keeping control of the putk in Bracebridge end, passed to Daryl Leatherdale who finally got one past a hard worked goalies, three minutes later Port went ahead 2 - 0 on a goal by Jeff Mills, a well earned assist going to Sean Bradbury. The Green Machines slackened their pace just enough to let Bracebridge come right "back with two quick goals. The teams werenowina 2-2 tie at the end of regulation tiem, and a ten minute over- time period was necessary, Bracebridge opened the scoring but Jeff Mills assist- ed by Jarett Harman tied the score at 3 all, again Brace- bridge went ahead, Port still very determined saw Jeff Mills score his hat trick goal with Mike Sorley' assisting.
