/ Christmas is nothing new to Shawna Cornish of Port Perry as this will be her fourth. Shawna would like some dolls, a new sleigh, books, paint books and paints. So if you are listening or reading Santa, don't forget this pretty little girl. Christmas traditions (From page 25) oil lamps and on Christmas day all the families would get together in the evening for a feast ... there were a lot more people on the reserve then. (There were about 100) We hardly ever had turkey ... goose was the main thing we had ... with wild rice pudding. (The rice was gathered along the Nonquon River in the fall). We had plain Christmas trees with no lights, he recalls. But all the reserve would come to the church and the ladies would do the cooking ... the smoke would come out of the chimney. I was just a kid then but I réally miss it. '"'Now,'"' says Edgar, "There are about 35 members on the reserve and Christmas is a more 'individ- Do You Care? In the Slovakian countries, Goose (or Duck) was the main Christmas dish (rather than turkey) and home made sausages were cooked around it. Preserved apples and prunes were also eaten. Steve Krajcik, a store owner in Caesarea, was'born in Yugoslavia but lived in Italy and France before immigrating to Canada. He remembers Santa Claus as a man who brought presents carried on his back in" a woven basket (not in a sleigh). Children, rather than adults, received small gifts. But if you were bad you might find an onion, garlic or even a horse "bun" in your shoe. One tradition that Steve and his younger brother Mike both told me about centres on Christmas Eve. The whole family gathers and eats honey and walnuts. 'And isn't that what Christ- mas is all about no matter what the cultural influence? - A time to be with family, show love, rejoice in being alive and remember the birth of Jesus. Merry Christmas Gingerbread men run away from R.H. Cornish kids Lasl Tuesday, the Grade One French Immersion class at R.H, Cornish P.S. made gingerbread cookies. However, when they went to take them out of the oven, they were no where to be found; much to the child- ren's dismay. By chance, the gingerbread men had left a note directing the students to the office. The surprised students rushed (o the office and were told by Mrs. Midgley and Mr. Prentice that the ginger- bread men had just run off downtown and had left a note directing the children to the IGA. The students jumped into their coats and boots as quickly as possible and rushed "downtown, in an uproar. They arrived out of breath, only to find a third note directing them to the Port Perry Star Office. When the students still could not find them at the Port Perry Star, they decided that they had better place an ad in the paper and offer a reward of $100 to the person who found their gingerbread cookies. Although they were bemused by the whole event, they decided not to give up their search, and so they combed the stores on Queen Street. They stopped a policeman and an ambu- lance driver, but even they could not offer them any clues. Finally, at Hank's Bakery, they found a note directing them back to their school, so, as quickly as their little feet could carry them, -they hurried back to school, hoping against hope that this would be their lucky stroke. They decided to check their classroom first, and to their grand surprise they discovered their "Runaway" gingerbread men hidden under their gingerbread houses on their desks. Everyone was extremely angry at the cookies for having run away, as they gave them all a sound spanking. Then they did not waste any time in eating the gingerbread cookies that they were served. And, so ended the hunt for the "runaway" gingerbread men cookies. Did you, by any chance, see them downtown? THE JOYS {OF CHRISTMAS] J J COMPTON CABLE TV. Port Perry PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed.
