a hi. nd 4 og For the youngsters in Mrs. Watson's Grade 1 class How do you enchant a group of Grade 2 students? You form a troupe, perform a play, and allow the students to participate in the action, that's how. Port High students seem to have found the secret of pleasing a youthful audience as once again they success- fully performed A Child's Christmas - Fantasy, in company with the High School Music Department. On Dec. 2nd, a Child's Christmas in Port Perry played to a delighted crowd of children and parents at the High School. However, this year's play was something very special. The Mystical Road was Hot Turkey For Lunch days early as they enjoyed a hot turkey lunch with all at R.H. Cornish School, Christmas dinner came a few the trimmings last Friday afternoon. A traditional fantasy, the play's story line has the good folk, Princess Serena (Lisa Taylor), Page Robin (Todd Healey) and hero Alexander (played by Stokes himself) prevented from reaching Santa's Castle by the evil Baron Von Meanie (played by equally wicked Ed Deckert in a cut-to-cloth role), his wife Sybil (Leslie McNulty), henchman Mogumba (Sean Fewer) and two Zombies (Steve Foote and Julie Reid). Narrator Cassandra (Laurie O'Reilly) ties the tale together and periodically invites selected children to participate in the action. The ploy works, as instantly, many children volunteer to join the players in the action. After many shenanigans, a rousing, and amusing, sword fight by Alexander and Von Meanie and some pugilistics by Robin, bully Von Meanie is reduced to a mewling is reduced to a newling infant, justice triumphs, again, and hero and heroine depart to the - audience's cheers of delight. The formula works once again. So enthused were the players by their success that they undertook two "Roads - shows." On Wednesday the 16th, the Kindergarten classes and Grades one and two at R.H. Cornish were treated to the Grade 13 half- hour show, hosted by Jennifer Simmonds and Lea Dowson, - who also supplied some delightful Christmas music, as well as the incidental music in the play. The elementary pupils response was, to put it mildly deafening. The players themselves were thrilled at this opportunity of a success- ful Secondary-Elementary liaison, such activity being currently highly favoured by the Durham Board. The Port 13 Buskers then climaxed their 'run' with a special guest appearance on Monday morning at Mother Theresa Elementary School in Markham, where Stokes' father currently teaches. Thus even more Junior students were given the opportunity of sharing the magic of theatre with these dedicated Port Perry teen- agers. Support statf for the production included make- up crew (Karen McHugh), stage crew (Mike Taylor), ubiquitous clowns Norma Arney and Karen Alexander, and staff advisor Diane Lackie. The Christmas spirit is alive and well and living in Port Perry in the hearts of playwright, cast and crew of The Mystical Road, as many junior students will now happily attest.
