EE NE LA re Looking back at events of 1981 (From page 12) and Durham Police combined drug squads has let to the arrest of three Port Perry residents on aseries of narcoticrelated charges. Durham Region will not make a decision on a major golf course and housing development proposed for Scugog Township until further study on the environmental impact has been completed. There have been numerous cases of missing dogs reported in Scugog and Uxbridge Town- ships over the past couple of months, and several of the owners contacted by the Star believe their pets werestolen. Constable Brian Curtis is a qualified breath- alyser unit operator with Durham Region Police, and he has a job to do. He will be busy during the coming festive season. Don't mix drinking and driving, if you don't want to meet Constable Curtis. Scugog Township's tight money policy appears to be paying off as figures released indi- cate that Township's spending for 1981 will be right on budget, and there is even a good chance of asmall surplus. Scugog Township council has thrown its support behind a bid by Uxbridge council to bring GO Trainservice into Uxbridge. Hydro electric rates in Port Perry will be going up 13.4 per cent in January for both resi- dential and general service customers. Water and sewer rates are expectedtogoup . 14 per cent when Durham Region council meets toapproverate inereases for 1982. Sitting there in God's House brought to all the True feeling of Christmas! The Dave Thomson family spent Christmas day with Mr. and Mrs. Jack McCowan in Scarboro. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Phoenix attended the 40th Anniversary of Harold and Wilda Clark at the Deer Park Inn. Mrs. Verna Baird enjoyed Christmas Day with Mr. and Mrs. MacMustard and family. Mrs. Tony. Minten travelled to Holland where she attended the funeral of her Dear Mother and later during her two weeks visit, her Aunt and Uncle also passed away. We extend our deepest sympathy to her family. Visiting from Sarnia, were Dale and Ken Ellison and daughters, Amy and Lisa who spent the week with her parents Don and Helen -McKean. Other guests were Connie and Mark McKean, The David McKean's of Whitby, The Fitzgeralds of Pickering, The Bishops and the Larry Treleaven family from Barrie. Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Mann entertained both their families at Christmas with December retail sales (From page2) Jewellery, said he was pleased with the Christmas business, as he described October and November as "very slow" months for sales. Mr. Pearse said watches were popular gift items this year, and he was another local merchant who found that buyers were. "being very selective and looking for value for their money." He said people were pay- ing with cash, rather than by credit car Greg He fering of Greg's Mens Wear also found credit card buying down and more attention paid by shoppers to price, selection and quality. Mr. Heffering said mens clothing sales have been sluggish all year and he estimates that his December sales may be down by as much as 10 per cent over the same month last year. He said the tough economy is hurting the mens clothing business, especially. the big ticket items like suits and higher priced sports jackets. With higher costs for everything, he suggested that one area people are cutting back in is clothing. He said this year, less expensive items like gloves, sweaters, ties, shirts and robes were popular as gifts. He agreed that shoppers may be waiting for post- Christmas sales when prices are reduced and he expects to be busy when he holds a sale early in January. No doubt one reason why Port. Perry merchants generally = found that Christmas sho obping here was good is the cost of gasoline. With the price going up all the time, it costs more and more tq make those shopping trips outside the local community, many relatives from Scarboro, Toronto, and Brantford.
