"It is time to call a spade a spade,'"' he said. Scugog doesn't, have the sewer or water capacity for new in- dustry, and maybe it is just as well to let Oshawa and Whitby have the problems of pollution," he told council. Councillor Espey went on to say that Scugog could become a bedroom comm- unity of high-priced homes. "They are the ones that: are selling these days, not those in the $60,000 range." Councillor Espey made the comments during a discuss- ion Monday afternoon be- tween council and Dr. Mo- feed Michael, the head of Durham Region's planning department. The topic of discussion was Scugog Grace UCW byChristine Prentice January meeling was held at the home of Mrs. Margaret Morrow. Lynde Creek in the Town of Whitby, and Bowmanville and Soper Creeks in the Town of Newcastle, are open for trout fishing all year between the CNR railway line and lake Ontario. North of the CNR line, these streams remain closed to all fishing until the last Satur- day in April, to protect spawning fish. Runs of rainbow trout in lake Ontario tributary streams have increased dramatically in recent years, due to sea lamprey control and improvements in fish habitat. Early spring fishing in the new "all year" areas offers the opportunity to catch trophy rainbow trout within minutes of Oshawa, Whitby and Toronto. ' A RE CE EE EE a proposed subdivision of 26 lots gn a piece of land on the west side of the old Brock Road near the intersection of Concession 4, south of Utica." Councillor Espey said he personally would be in fav- our of a development there, if the homes were expensive and attractive. Dr. Michael responded that there could be a danger in approving too many estate residential developments for that might ultimately hurt the market. But he said the planning department in not opposed to the Bosco development. He suggested that munic- ipalities push developers for stronger commitments about when developments will take place, rather than just giving approvals with no timetables for actual con- struction. "Maybe I'm getting cyn- ical, but developers may not want to build. The only want approvals to increase the 4th. Program: Jean Aldred read an amusing poem on the day after Xmas. In Scugog recently, a pro- posed development (Bola- hood) near Caesarea was rejected by the Housing Min- istry. A large development near Chalk Lake (Ridge- land) is currently tied up at the Regional level waiting an environmental study and facing strong opposition from some regional coun- cillors, and nearby property owners. After the discussion on the Bosco proposal south of Utica, council voted to opp- ose the official plan amend- ment. zation.
