Scugog council indicated Monday that it would have no objection to a plan to convert the Pentecostal Church on Lilla Street into four apar- tment units. Mr. W. Townsend told council that he is interested in buying the building and converting it to apartments providing he could get some assurance the municipality would not block a necessary re-zoning. "I don't want to wind up with a church I can't use or a congregation I don't have," Mr. Townsend told council. -At one point during the discussion Mayor Jerry Taylor said *'I think thereis a need for churches and apar- tments." "I would hope there would be no problems in re-zoning the property for residential use, and I believe the council feels the same way," said Mayor Taylor. However, any re-zoning application would have to be circulated to neighbours living within 400 feet who could lodge a formal objec- tionif they desired. Mr. Townsend told council he was initially interested in buying the Baptist Church at Queen and Rosa Streets, unaware that an interest had been expressed in this building by the Pentecostal congregation. Winter budget woes (From pagel) The Township's four graders and six trucks equipped with plows have been working almost steadily for the past six weeks keeping theroads clear. And with this amount of work, breakdowns of equip- ment become more of a problem because there is none available for back-up. Whena full crew works ona Saturday, for example, the cost to the Township is about $500 per hour. If the crews are called out on Sunday, the cost is $650 per hour. Mr. MacDonald says that when there is a break in the weather and the crews are not plowing snow off the roads, they are busy "winging" the snow back from the sides of roads so there will be a place to plow the next batch of fresh snow whenit falls. Haoweuar, te istrasees that with the traditionally windy weeks of the winter still to come in March, there could be a severe problem with drifting. Already in 1982, there have been two clean-ups of snow in the commercial core of Port Perry (there was none last year) at a cost of $3000. The heavy snowfall of the past few weeks has meant some heavy pay-cheques for the men who operate the snow removal equipment. With overtime, one operator recently had a gross pay of more than $700 for one week. Scugog Township is not unique as municipalities all over Ontario and North America are groaning under the cost of getting rid of the whitestuff this winter. And the long range predic- tions are that the month of March may be the worst yet this winter. "You've got to have Heart!" February is Heart Month and on Friday and Saturday of this week, the bright red roses which are a symbol for Heart Month will go on sale in the shopping districts of Port Perry. Claudia Little [left] will be one of the ladies selling the roses this week.
