This is the first year we have sent skaters to this well- organized competition. Each class of approximately 85 skaters is divided into flights of 10-14 skaters. Sarah Labonavich and Dana Forder both skated well, Sarah" placing 9th in her flight, and Dana placing 10th in hers. Congratulations, girls! On Sat., Feb. 20, a number of our skaters will compete in the Pine Ridge competition, this year hosted by the Ajax Figure Skating Club at the Ajax Community Centre on Centennial Ave- nue. This competition involves skaters from approximately 10 clubs in the area, with the three best from each club in each category representing their club. Registration is at 7 a.m and the competion could go on as late as 11 p.m. Set music is provided for free-style routines, and some skaters have their own music. Except for the Dance and Bronze Interpretive classes, all skaters are required to do figures; dance pairs are judged on the Canasta and Swing dances. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded in each category, and the club with the most medals keeps a club trophy for the year. Last year's competition was held in Cobourg; our medal winners there were Valerie Grosvenor (gold), Tracy Tracy Dowson (silver), and Tawni Newman and David Akkerman (bronze). Novice A team beats Cobourg by Linda Parry In an exciting game on Friday night the J.T. Pearce Auctioneers beat the Co- bourg team 5-2. The team seemed to mon- opolize the puck throughout the first period. The Cobourg goalie made many good saves, but finally beat him during a penalty being served by a Cobourg player. On a good passing play by Jason Cochrane to Korbie Castle, Mark Andrews was able to breakaway and fire the puck past the Cobourg goalie. The Cobourg team scored twice in the second period, once on goaltender Shawn Larocque, and then on goalie Noel Lovering. But with only seconds left, Steve Staniland of Port tied the game when he caught the corner of the net. The assists went to Danny Sluggett and Mike Feasby. Cobourg was a hard hitting group of boys and took two more penalties in the game. The Port team took advan- tage of them and scored ATOM TOURNAMENT SCUGOG ARENA SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20th "over 8:00A.M. - Port Perry vs. Pickering Hockey Assoc. 9:00 A.M. - Pickering Village vs. East York 10:00 A.M. - Uxbridge vs. Whitby 11:00A.M. - Mississauga vs. Willowdale three more times in the final period. Steve Staniland got his second goal of the night with the assist by Mike Feasby. Mark Andrews got a hat trick with the assists going to Jan Heyes; Danny Sluggett and two to Jason Cochrane. The goaltending by Larocque and Lovering really helped to keep our boys in top spirits, as they made some fine saves throughout. The boys face the Ux- bridge and Stouffville teams this week to continue their round robin playoffs. Sm (TROPHIES, | ENGRAVING | IDO-NO's! y 78 QUEEN STREET - 985-2839 N / T-- _-- ---mt
