February 17, 1982 Balmy weather brings crowds out to races Racers hit 130 kmh by Bill Lock There was lots of action Sunday with driver compet. ing against driver in the Port Perry Snowmobile Club Ice Drag Races on the ice surface of Kent's Bay. The balmy weather was to every- " ones taste and a good crowd was on hand to watch the racers hit speeds up to 130 kph. There were many stock -- 3 Ener A a oe ei, It was just a fine day for snowmobile drags and both sides of the quarter mile course on Lake Scugog were lined with spectators Sunday afternoon. The races were sponsored by the Port Perry Pee Wees take lead in series What started out to be a lack of lustre game ended in a rout for Port Perry Pee Wee I's over rival Uxbridge in the first game of a best three out of five series. It wasn't until the 9:20 mark of the first period that Brad Menzies opened the scoring from John Harman. Uxbridge tied the game minutes later when they caught our team napping momentarily. Steve Durham, back in the line up after missing several games due to a snowmobile accident, put Port ahead 2-1 assisted by Brad Menzies before the period ended. Port added three more goals in the second period to take a 5-1 lead into the final frame. Scoring for Port, David Burnett from David Culbert, Scott Feasby from John Lally, and a coach's delight goal ended the period. This goal was the prettiest of the game if not the season so far. David Culbert fed a pass to John Lally up the middle who skated hard to just inside the opposition blue line and fed a perfect pass to David Burnett, who made no mistake on the shot. These kind of goals give Coachs a feeling of accomplishment. _ The third period saw Port outscore the opposition 6-1. The second game of this series played in Uxbridge Sun. afternoon started out much the same way as the first game, but Uxbridge used a close checking stick to your man approach, which kept the Port boys off balance and broke up many scoring opportunities. This was an entirely different aproach from the first game where Port were able to skate and shoot at will. The close checking paid off for Uxbridge as the first period ended scoreless. Chairman Bruce Luke and a long list of hard working Club members deserve much credit for producing this great enter- taining day, which is an important fund raiser to improve snowmobile trails for all riders. Special thanks to Port Perry Rent All, Willy Houtheys and Jim Adams who donated much needed facilities or services and to all our snowploughers named and unnamed who were faced with an enormous task this year. And a special "no thanks" to the few people who went to great lenghts to avoid a modest admission charge - money that pays for trails for them to ride on! And to the riders who turned out - hope you had a great day. A list of winners follows. Also, CORSA Snowarama. with Chairman Dave Ballingall was a well organized success again this year, raising alsmost $30,000.00 for Crippled Children. This year's super snow conditions have brought out the riders in full force. Unfortunately, so many machines makes the trails rough and keeping up with trail grooming becomes almost impossible with the present resources. If you ride and still are not a Club member, please join us and make your contribution towards trail improvement (call 985-2888). All Club members are reminded that there is an important General Meeting scheduled for Sunday March 14 at 2:00 p.m. There is much still to'be done to improve our snowmobiling and every- one's input is needed. Elections will be held at this meeting and your support will lend assistance to a very hard working Executive. : ~ ne
