10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed. March 3, 1982 FOE A A .d | IR \ * PRE RATMC AAS ks Business people assist PPHS with Career Week activities by Diane Lackie It might have been "Career Weak in Oshawa a short time ago, according to an Oshawa newspaper, but here at Port Perry High School, careers are being given priority this month. The Durham Board of Education is encouraging career awareness in its schools, so February has been officially designated as 'Career Weeks' in various high schools. Port Perry High School kicked off its own career sessions with a highly successful presentation by a panel of local business and professional persons. They kept two hundred grade twelve and thirteen students enthralled for two hours with anecdotes and friendly advice. Chaired by Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce, Chuck Preston, the panel of Mike Fowler, lawyer, Jim Greave, IGA manager, Jim Lawrence, pharmacist, Stan Martin, Standard Trust manager, John Stewart, doctor, and business manager Preston himself, each gave in turn his personal story of how he arrived at his present posi- tion. Each also offered suggestions to the rapt student audience on educa- tional requirements, per- sonal attitudes, and courses of action, among some topics. Much useful advice was generated from the panelists as they spoke. Fowler highly advocated specialized Uni- versity training as valuable career preparation, while Greave detailed how to become successful mainly through hard work, initiative determination, and the occasional break. Lawrence described the salutary Volunteers needed for adult literacy program ~ The Durham Board of Education is expanding its Adult Basic Education program into Port Perry for the convenience of those adults in the area who, for various reasons, missed the opportunity when they were younger to learn to read or write, or those who have limited abilities in these subjects. The key to the program is each student working inde- pendently with a trained volunteer tutor on a one-to- one basis supervised by a qualified teacher. Any persons willing to volunteer tq tutor these students should phone Mr. Taylor at the Durham Board Offices in Oshawa at 576-4600 extension 261, or Port Perry High School at 985-7337 to leave their name and tele- phone number. 'The program will be offered for about two hours, one night a week at Port Perry High School. The only skills volunteers need are the ability to read and a degree of patience. Volunteers will be required to attend one or. two training sessions in advance of the start of the program. The program has been successfully operating in the Oshawa-Whitby area for about two years and many students who were unable to read are now reading and comprehending well. It has opened new vistas for the students and has helped many of them in their work. There are also some openings for new students. Anyone interested should phone the above-noted numbers. 5252525¢ 252525252 5252 plop lop [ep 202625252030 tI CIC CACC ICIMA ICICI CIM C CACTI CAC ICICICI ICICI! To Toh Ten Tes Tb! Stewart felt the 'know yourself' philosophy and the sorting out of priorities were primary concerns and part of the necessary maturing process. Chairman Preston then summarized the formal part of the morning's presenta- tion by reviewing key items in the students' search for employment: search for opportunities, follow up contacts forcefully; temper attitudes, avoiding selectiv- ity, and recognize all experi- ence is valuable; learn about prospective employers and be concerned about your own input; dress appropriately for success. These and other items were concisely put to the students for considera- tion, all neatly equated -- attitude plus determination plus initiative equals success -- by the Chairman. The students eagerly absorbed the speakers' suggestions and participated in a spirited open forum session which rounded off the panel's presentation. Many worries and concerns were aired as questions were directed at individual panelists and field by same. The session closed . with thanks from Diane Lackie from the School's English Department, which had hosted the event. Other Career-oriented events and activities to follow are a visit from two W. Laurier University pro- fessors to address the Grade 13's on Wednesday, a presentation by a profes- sional writer on Thursday and an edition of the school newspaper featuring careers. Meanwhile, several departments are currently sending students on work experience to area busi- nesses and employers, and other departments are scheduling career aware- ness projects. And as usual, Guidance Service is the hub of much career preparation activity. "Career Weak'? Not in Port Perry this February. Ask any Port High Senior.
