Mr. Burnett says the club would welcome any new members who want to take up the sport. Anyone with basic riding skills can easily learn polo, he says. [See story] If you're a horse owner and looking for a way to get in some riding this winter, you just might want to con- sider indoor polo. That's right, the so-called "sport of kings" is being played by a-small group of enthusiasts twice a week at an indoor arena on the farm of Paul Yvonne Burnett, just east of Blackstock. There are about eight of them who have been playing on a regular basis since last November and Mr. Burnett says they would welcome any horse owner who would like to give this sport a try. Indoor polo is much like the outdoor variety, except the pace is slower of course, because of the confines of the 60 by 110 arena. There may be two or three players to a team, and the basic idea is to whack a rubber ball into your opponents goal. The members of the Fox Brush Polo Club play on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Mr. Burnett says that most of the members had little or no experience at this game, but anybody with basic riding skills can get the hang of it in a short time. A helmet with face guard, knee padding, and mallet are all the equipment required, along with a horse, of course. Polo enthusiasts take time out for a photo during a lively match Sunday afternoon. The girls put up a great effort. saddles are used, Mr. Burnett says that western trained horses are ideal because of the rein control which allows the rider to turn the horse with one hand and wield the wooden mallet with the other. Because of the short bursts of speed, sudden stops and tight turns, a couple of seven minute periods will give a horse ample exercise. While it may not take long for a rider to get the hang of the sport, becoming highly skilled is something else again. You can imagine what it would be like trying to hit a ball on the ground while sitting on a moving horse. Mr. Burnett learned the sport in his native Australia, where the outdoor variety is been devoted to the game for the past 15 years or so. For the beginner, he will provide expert instruction. The arena has sloping boards to prevent injuries to horse or rider, and a dirt floor. Mr. Burnett says that once the warm weather arrives, he is hoping to be able to organize outdoor matches on a large playing field. "Once you start playing the game, it really gets into your blood," he says. If you're interested in this sport, give Mr. Burnett a call at 986-5250. The arena has an elevated, glassed-in viewing lounge and you'd be more than welcome to watch a couple of games. Girls lose two matches On Sat.
