a News from Seagrave and area . by Marilyn Beacock From bits and pieces I gathered on Thursday Dr. Morley Pitts of Greenbank has never been one to dabble in mundane things. He didn't have just your basic house- warming party he had a gigantic house - moving party and most of Green- bank and many former residents of this little hamlet turned out in full-force to witness this most "moving" experience. Television film crews and reporters from little newspapers right up to the big city dailies all crowd- ed around to record on film and in print the progression of Dr. Pitts home from the main corner of Greenbank to its "final ?"' resting place on the north side of the 9th conc. With the exception of a flat tire on the float the whole operation proceeded without a hitch under the capable direction of the Bonsma's from Blackstock. As my husband and I were driving over to Greenbank on Thursday I was feeling a trifle guilty because we had kept our two older boys and their friends from their classes at the Greenbank school so that they could watch this 120 ton house being moved. When we HR HRS FEE a arrived at Greenbank our kids and their friends were soon absorbed in the throng _of other classmates from their room. I happened to look across the highway and what face do I see but that of our 'son's teacher just as excited and every bit as engrossed as the kids were. My quiet feelings were immediately replaced by those of laughter and 1 thought of the old adage "If you can't beat em - join 'em! and how appropriately it applied to the teacher: in question. On Tuesday evening Mr. Ray Jobin was a special guest at the Brownie meet- ing and gave the gals quite an informative talk on compasses and flags. Thanks for coming Ray! Mrs. Jeannette Ross from the Port Perry Rape Crises Centre was scheduled to speak to our Good Neighbours Group but at the last moment was detained at a conferenced and was unable to attend. As every- one was disappointed at this unfortunate happening 1 believe the hostesses for the March meeting are planning to make arrangements with Mrs. Ross to possibly attend that meeting. About 100 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, leaders and parents enjoyed their annual banquet last Saturday evening which commenorat- ed Baden-Powell week. Following a delicious turkey dinner several presentations were made. Mrs. Angela Dykeman, a former Beaver leader, was presented with a lovely pendant with the Beaver insignia on it as a token of appreciation for her time and effort spent with the Beavers. Among the other present- ations were two portraits of Rev. John Roundell which will be hung in both the Seagrave and Greenbank United Churches. Rev. Roundell was a former. minister on this pastoral charge and he also was the chaplain for the Scouting Movement in this area. March 3, 1962 -- 2) Greg Smith really wanted to be a driver of one of those 18 wheeler rigs instead of a salesman for an electrical company. It seems that Mr. Smith has been burning the candles into the wee small hours during this past week carving out an 18 wheeler tc race in the Rally this past week-end. Well looks like all that hard work has paid off for Gary - he won first in design for his efforts! Go "BJ go! I think it'll be time for him to get back to Emmerson! The community was saddened to learn of the death of the late Mr. Wilfred Sturman on Thursday. Although Mr. Sturman had not been enjoying good health this past few years his death still comes as a shock. We extend our sincerest sympathy to his friends and family. We were pleased to have as our guest speaker at Church on Sunday Mr. Allan Balson from Queen's University and Theological College in Kingston. The lovely flowers that enhanced the sanctuary were placed there by the family of the late Mr. W. Sturman. Visitors to the birthday box this week were Betty and Melody - Anne Somerville and Reg Abraham. Reg being the honest person he is deposited his total amount but you see he isn't nearly the age you might think he is because his birthday really only comes once in four years. Now why didn't that happen to orte of us gals - so we wouldn't have to lie about our age! Congratulations folks and hope you all had a super day! Mr. and Mrs. Don Beacock and boys enjoyed having an old friend and neighbour for dinner on Saturday evening in the person of Mrs. Angela Dykeman and sons Derek and Darryl of Ball Point. While in the village Angie dropped in to see Gord and Emme Burnet for awhile. Mrs. Stanley Vernner will be the hostess for the next U.C.W. meeting which is scheduled to be held on Wed. March 10 at 8:00 p.m. Following the meeting their will be an interesting demonstration of needlecraft and guests will be able to purchase any of the kits they choose. Proceeds from the sales of the kits will go to the U.C.W. All interested community ladies are most welcome to attend. Gee the Durward families certainly have been getting around lately. Last week-end Earl, and Joan's father Mr. Leslie from Oshawa, were treated to dinner at the Swiss Chalet to celebrate Mr. Leslie's 75th birthday and Earl's ? birthday. I was: going to take a guess at your age Earl but I decided I'd keepit a secret and you and I can_stay sweet sixteen for- ever! This week-end Earl and Joan and family along with Marion Durward joined the Ray Smith clan for dinner at the Ponderosa. This gather- ing was to celebrate the happy occasion of the Jobin's 32nd 'wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Milne also were present for the festivities. A little bird told me that those Jobin boys sure do like fish and she was afraid if they ate anymore they'd begin to grow fins! A very special thank-you is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Al Wray. Their hospitality and the hard work they con- tributed made the Brownies Fun Day last Saturday a great success. We would also like to thank Ray Abraham and Al for their time and effort in preparing the pond for skating. Too bad the weatherman wasn't as co-- operative as you guys! I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all those kind souls who took a few minutes and called me with news items. It certainly was a b-i-g help. Thanks again eveyone. Congratulations to three very talented young ladies who recently attained honours in their piano exam- inations. Miss Amy-Lyn Wanamaker, Miss Kristi Hutcheon and Miss Beth McKay were the happy recipients of this honour. It seems that between Greenbank and Seagrave we certainly have some up-and- coming young stars in the field of music. At the recent Musical Festival at Sunder- land Miss Alissa Lee placed first in the Instrumental class, mst. Scott Spencer also won top spot in the vocal section for his age, Miss Kelly Boyle placed third in her vocal age group and Eldon Sears and Michael McCabe were successful in winning third prize in the vocal duet section. Congrat- ulations kids we so very very proud of you! These talented young people have attained the above distinctions with some very excellent training from their equally talented young teacher, Mrs. Joan Lee. After walking through the doors of the G.M. South Plant for some 30 odd years, my dad, Mr. Ken Rodd of Port Perry recently made the decision to retire and Wednesday of last week was his last day on the job. I would like to take this opportunity to wish he and my mom best wishes for many years. You've both earned it - now relax and enjoy every minute of it! Just a final word Dad, now with all this new spare time we all expect to see a weed- less garden and no doubt the grass will be cut within an inch of its life! We'll prob- ably have to buy a new pair of tires for that John Deere next Christmas - these ones will be worn down to the rims after this summer! Right Uncle Murray!
