Fire damage ~ to apartment "+ near $50,000 Damage could be as high as $50,000 in a fire Monday at a house on Lilla Street in Port Perry. Port Perry fire department officials believe the blaze broke out when a furnace pipe in the basement over-heated sending flames up the walls and into the false ceiling between the floors. The house had been renovated into four apartments, but all occupants managed to get out safely. The majority of the damage was to the two apartments and contents at the front of the two-storey house. Part of the total damage bill was the result of smoke and water. Vol.116 No. 15. 32 Pages © Wednesday, March 10, 1982 Wood Stove Warning It's only a matter of time until a disaster Scugog Township building inspector Ray Penney warns that there are a lot of im- properly installed wood stoves in Township homes, and "it is only a matter of time' before there is a fatal disaster. Mr. Penney issued the warning in a report to Town- ship council Monday after- noon, and he suggests the municipality look at the possibility of requiring a permit: for installing wood burning appliances to help ensure that they are inspect- ed for safety reasons. This is a matter of great concern for both the fire departments in Caesarea and Port Perry, he states in his report. Mr. Penney, who is a captain with the Port Perry fire department, told the Star he has seen about half a dozen faulty installations of wood stoves and pipes in the' past couple of months, and said some are courting disaster. ~. = He mentioned one case where a stove was only two inches from a wooden wall with no protective shield and Seek more members on Regional Council The number of members on the Durham Region council could be increased from the present 30 to 32, if the Regional council agrees. In a report to Durham, the provincial ministry of inter- governmental affairs says that presently both the communities of Ajax and Whitby are under- represented on the council, and each should be allowed an additional member. Ajax currently has two reps on the council (includ: ing the mayor) and Whitby has three, including the mayor. Ajax has a pop- ulation of about 24,000 people, while the population of Whitby i§ now more the 35,000. Whether or not the Regional council will agree to increase the number of members remains to be seen, however. Already, certain regional councillors from Oshawa are quoted as saying that there should be an additional councillor from that city on the Durham council. Others, including the Regional council's finance committee chairman John Aker points to the fact that adding two or three councillors means paying out more money and (Turntopage2) the stove sat on four inch legs above a wooden floor. Mr. Penney says the most common and serious install- ation problem is stoves too close to walls. The Building Code and Fire Marshall's regulations both say that stoves should be three feet from any combustible wall, or 18 inches if the wall is protected by an asbestos shield. He said he has seen litera- ture supplied by the manu- facturers of some wood stoves which do not meet the Building Code requirements. He urged that anyone installing; a wood stove should follow the Building Code and Fire Marshall regulations, and suggested they contact their local fire department or the Township building inspection depart- ment. Both fire departments in Scugog have recorded stove and chimney fires this winter, but fortunately there have been 'no serious in- cidents. . However, he makes it clear in his report that unless = there is some kind of inspec- tion procedure, it may be just a matter of time before there is a fatality. Township council agreed to look into the question of whether the municipality can legally demand a permit for the installation of wood stoves and pipes. Highway 12 to be rebuilt in Spring Warren Bitulithic Ltd. of Downsview has been award- ed a $2,343,478 contract by the provincial Transport- ation ministry for work on the reconstruction this summer of eight miles of Highway 12 from Man- chester to Brooklin. The announcement of the contract was made by the provincial ministry this week, and calls from work to get underway this May for completion later this fall. Bruno and sister Ireen Stender, of Bowmanville, spent a few hours with their grandfather last Sunday near Caesarea waiting for that big one to strike. There is only a few more days left for fishing before the season ends. See photos and report on page 8. ~ 2 A i
