Jim Lamb(front] of Port Perry, also won a bronze medal in his division, as he was able to pin his opponent. Juniors hand loss to Ajax by Bev Thompson On Mar. 1, the Sportsland Junior Ringette team travelled to Ajax for a play- off game. When we started out for Ajax, the weather . was nasty, but it didn't dampen the girls spirits. They played excellent; scoring 5 goals to Ajax's 3. Scoring for Port Perry were; Kelly Storry - 2 and Kelley Raines-3, Kelley Raines also gag pete OA had 1 assist along with Joanne Connors 1 and Brenda Shepstone 2, Allyson Mitchell, Diane McDougall, Susan Waite and Lisa Canning all played a terrific game on defense. Stephanie Butt and Tracey Olson hoth had leg. injuries but played a very good game. Jill Kendall had a terrific game in net. Final minute The Port Perry Wrestling Club played host Saturday to the Ontario- Provincial Championships in the midget (15-16 year olds) age class. In all there were 155 competitors in 13 different weight classes wrestling for gold, silver and bronze medals. Some of those taking part came from as far away as Ottawa, Windsor and Thunder Bay. There were eight wrestlers from the host club, and two of them finished in the medals. Jim Lamb won a bronze in the 138 pound class. In his final match for the bronze, "Jim was behind early on points, but fought back to pin his opponent from Alliston. And in the 149 pound class, Patrick Bertrand also captured a bronze medal as he out-pointed his Colling- wood opponent 6-0 in the final match. Patrick is just coming off a cracked hip bone suffered several weeks ago in a competition. Atoms go two up in Lakefield playoffs by M. Leatherdale Fri. Mar. 12th, The Mal- mont Farm Atoms travelled to Lakefield for their first game in the best of five: series. Owing to a much smaller ice surface, it was not one of our better games, but still managed a 4-1 "victory. Lakefield took an early lead, but after one period of piay the score was heroics give win by Paul VanCamp ~ On Sat. Mar. 13, the Port Perry George Stone Realtors travelled to Woodbridge for the first game of the best of seven semi-final series. It was a very exciting and close game of hockey with Port Perry coming home ahead in a 3-2 game. Woodbridge drew the first goal of the game just half-way into the first period, but a fired up Port team only let them have that lead for 11 seconds, when Stephen Connors scored after a nice passing play with Rob Brown. Port then scored to take the lead at the beginning of the second period when Blair Phillips set up Craig Venning in front of the net and made no mistake about putting it away. Woodbridge then came on to tie it up, but before the second period - * ended Port regained the lead with Blair Phillips scoring _ after some strong forecheck- ing by Craig Venning and Keith Roberge. The third period was scoreless with both goal- tenders robbing the shooters many times. Stacey Ballingall played excellent between the pipes "Stoning"' them all night. The stage was then set for the second game in Port Perry on Sunday night. It was one of the most exciting games that Port's arena has had this year. Port over- came a one goal deficit and tied the game then went on to win it 4-3 in" thé dying to Pee Wee team seconds. Port Perry scored on their first shift of the game when Blair Bailey put it past the Woodbridge goaler on a low corner shot. Rob Brown and Stephen Connors drew assists on the play. Port then went on to take a two goal lead after Rob Brown put the puck in the net with Stephen Connors and Blair Bailey setting him up. Before the first period was over Woodbridge had got back one goal and by the end of the second had taken a 3-2 lead. Port Perry started the third period well but could not put it past the .Woodbridge netminder. Finally with 38 seconds to play and the Port net empty, Mike Gibson and Chris Skura fed the puck to Brad Traves who put it in the mesh to tie the game. Then the Port fans were happy with the tie, to force overtime. But evidently the players were not. Brad Traves passed the puck to Tim. Alsopp who made two fabulous moves and put the puck on Mike Gibson's stick and from there into the net with only 4 seconds left on the clock. This was a great game for all to see. We the Pee Wees number 2's would like to congratulate the Pee Wees number 1's for their victory in Picton on Sunday night. Port Perry Realtors next home games are Friday, March 19th at 9:00 and Sun- day 21st at 7:30 after playing Tuesday in Woodbridge, tied at one goal apiece on a goal by Mike Sorley. The second period was a see saw end to end battle but Jeff Mills finally broke the dead- lock with Eric Grosvenor assisting. Port added two more goals in the third, the first by Mike Sorley from just inside the blueline, the second from Jeff Mills assisted by Jarett Harman. Keep up the good work Chris and Ryan, you're doing an excellent job between the pipes. After defeating Lakefield 7-1 on Sun. Mar. 14th, The Malmont Farm Atoms have a two game edge in their "playoff action. When The Green Machines get fired up there is no stopping them, and the results show on the scoreboard. The first and second -- periods - were completely dominated by Port. with three goals being scored in the first and four in the second. The third period they slackened' their pace and allowed Lakefield to score their one marker. Clair Cornish led the way in scoring picking up four goals, Eric Grosvenor, Mike Sorley and Sean Bradbury each had single markers. Mike Toye who has worked very hard on defense, but seldom gets credited with an assist picked up three in this game, Paul Wylie earned two and the following players each had singles, Jeff Mills, Jarett Harman, Chris Legere, Sean Brad- bury, Derek Fitzgerald, Matt Durward and | Todd Heyes. Our next game is on Wed. Mar. 17 in Lakefield. The Atoms will be competing in the Uxbridge Tournament on Sat. Mar. 20th with their first game scheduled for 11 o'clock. Port Novice leads in playoffs by Linda Parry In an exciting game on Wednesday, Mar. 10 the J.T. Pearce Auctioneers defeated Uxbridge 4-2. The game was full of action and Port scored twice in the first period. Jason Cochrane backhanded the first goal on a pass from Mark - Andrews and Chris Forder. Within a minute Jan Heyes popped the second one in on a scramble in front of the Uxbridge net. The assists went to Jason Cochrane and Mark Andrews. Uxbridge came back with a goal on a corner shot by Donnie James, assisted by Duncan Hunter and Blair Cook. In the second period each team wads penalized a tripping offence and Port was able to utilize the man advantage. Steve Staniland was the goal scorer and the assist went to Mike Feasby. Mark Andrews scored for Port on a breakaway pass from Jan Robertson to push Ports lead to 4-1. With only 14 seconds left in the game, Donnie James of Uxbridge scored again with the assist going to Paul Weekes. The goaltending for Port was shared by Shawn Larocque and Noel Lovering and both boys played well, however Noel made some exceptional saves. " On Friday night the Auctioneers were to meet the team from Lindsay, how- ever, Lindsay cancelled out and. so Port had an easy victory. . Tweens lose On Sat. Mar. 13, our P.P. Chris Allen Aluminum team travelled to Whitby for a play-off game. The girls held their own well in the first period, letting Whitby only score 1 goal. In the second, both teams scored a goal, but due to an injury to Natalie Franseen in the first of the second period, the girls were so tired in the third, from double shifting, that they just couldn't hold their own with score ending 7-2 for Whitby. : Scoring for Tween was Heidi Meisner with both goals, 1 assisted by Leslie Biffin, © ~ ----_-- mmm
