The facts about child tax credits So you are the proud parent of a brand new baby! Your new bundle of joy may well be more of a credit to you than you think. This year's child tax credit has been raised to $261 per eligible child and families with a net family income of $23,470 or less are entitled to that full amount. An eligible child is one born in 1964 or later, or under 18 years by December 31, 1981, for whom you received a family allowance payment in January 1982, Last year almost 2.5 million families took advantage of the child tax credit. To ensure that cheques are issued as quickly as possible, Revenue Canada, Taxation reminds all taxpayers to read care- fully the instructions in Schedule 10 which accompanies their income tax returns. Only the recipient of the family allowance payments may apply for the child tax credit. Since this is normally the mother, she will be the one to apply for and receive the credit. The other spouse, usually the father, must sign the Certification by Spouse even if he has no income. Without this signature your child tax credit will be delayed. If you are eligible for the credit, you must complete a tax return and attach Schedule 10 even if you do not have any income. You must also include your Family Allowance Infor- mation Slip (TFA1) which was mailed with your family allowance cheque in January 1982. And that's all there is to claiming a tax-free credit to supplement your family allowance payments. Night school students hold annual arts and crafts display On Tuesday evening, March 9, the Continuing Education Program at Port Perry H.S. held its annual Arts and Craft Display.
