Victoria County Planning Board: Harvey Malcolm and later attended the last dance of the season of the Dutch Cana- dian Club at the Kinsmen Hall in Oshawa. Special attraction of the evening was the crowning of the annual Queen of the Club who will preside for the year, and at their Fiesta in June. Congratulations to Miss Janet Smit who was selected as Queen from the 7 comely entrants present. Runners up were Misses Helen Kok and Miss Lorie Van Kirck. Excellent dancing to a band who played a variety of music to suit all tastes. A convivial crowd contributed to a most enjoyable evening. Mrs. Audrie Brown spent the weekend in Toronto with friends, and attended the annual dinner for former employees of Canada Life. Earlier in the week Audrie entertained friends from Montreal. Mr. Howard Malcolm spent a couple of days in Winnipeg this week in con- junction with his duties as first Vice Pres. of the Canadian Pork Congress at a meeting of the C.F.A. and other responsibilities. This week Howard flew to Mon- treal for a further meeting with his peers. A recent announcement by the Federal Govt. that the pro- ducers of various livestock will in future have to pay for grading, weight, inspection and other functions curr- ently carried out by the gov't agencies. This departure that local marketing agencies, the Fed. of Agric both provincial and federal are objecting to strenuously and with very good reason. These services are in- tended to protect the con- sumers as well as the pro- ducers and should be financed and directed by the general public in a govern- ment function. Mrs. Hazel Whittaker currently in Toronto General Hospital had a pace maker installed this past week and is expecting to undergo further surgery this week to correct a kidney condition. What was planned fora small crowd of close friends and supporters ended up with a capacity crowd of nearly 300 fans. Music was supplied by DJ Jeff Long - very suitable for the age group in attendance -- teeny boppers and upwards. Mrs. Myra Page had the misfortune recently to trip and fall partway down a stairway. As a result of her fall, Myra sustained a cut which requird 11 stitches to close and is currently sporting a multi-coloured eye. Hubby Clarence who recently divested himself of a full fledged beard following the termination of the Beard growing contest sponsored by the Farmers Mutual Ins. Co. and other Insurance Companies insists that he is in no way responsible. Saturday was a great day for all Canadians with the official repatriation of the Constitution. Even the 'smuggest of our citizens could hardly escape a deep feeling of partriotism and pride in being completely independent for our first time -in history. Even non- monarchists could not but be proud of the Queen in the manner in which she departed herself in the carrying out of her official duties. Her graciousness in meeting with the general public was most appealing. Canada has finally reached her maturity -- long over- due. Now hopefully our country's spokesmen will display the same maturity in their deliberation and vocal renditions. Time to put aside the provincial parochialism that has been so discon- certing to the overall Canadian scene. Before we are too hard on our politicians -- mouth- pieces of our nation, we should remember that these fellows, our leaders are really nothing but a sad re- flection of the people they represent (not too flattering a thought on occasion). If they were not, they wouldn't be there. Enough philosophy, but in conclusion would we throw out a challenge to all and sundry (both of them) to work in co-operation, not to tear down our country with continuous carping and' criticism, provide a greater toleration for our fellow men (even women) and realize that we are living in the best country in the world and strive to work towards the justifiable recgonition as a nation to which Canada is entitled.
