Ute Gabler, ¢ a student from Germany is learning all about spinning and weaving during a two month stay with Wendy Bateman of Port Perry. [See story) German girl learns spinning, weaving It is a long way from the Black Forest to an island off . the Scottish coast to the basement workshop of Port Perry spinner and weaver, Wendy Bateman. Ute Gabler, an 18 year old German girl who decided to take a year off to work and travel abroad before univer- sity, met Mrs. Bateman on the island of Arran last year and received an invitation to come to Port Perry to study the craft of spinning and weaving. She arrived in Port Perry on Good Friday and for the next couple of months, will work under the direction of Mrs. Bateman, who has earned a reputation for her work in spinning and weaving. Ute, "who speaks almost flawless English, developed an interest in spinning and weaving when -she left Germany a year ago to work as a sheep shearer in - England. Mrs. Bateman was on holi- day last October in Great Britain, and her interest in wools and weaving led her to the Scottish island of Arran where efforts are underway to save a breed of sheep' known as Soay which have a very fine, natural brown coloured wool. Working with Mrs. Bate- man for the next couple of months, Ute will learn the art of spinning and weaving and also the process of cleaning and treating raw wool, including the use of chemical and natural dyes. Mrs. Bateman has several looms in her basement work- shop in Port Perry. The most sophisticated is known as a Multiple 12 harness jack loom. This week they will attend a workshop on the use of chemical dyes at Seneca College in Toronto, and later this month a spinning seminar at York University. Mrs. Bateman began spinning and weaving about eight years ago, and her work has won awards and been selected for numerous craft shows in Ontario. And she is continuing to study as 'well; having completed two years of a master spinners course given by Durham College. This year, she will start a' three year course as a master weaver at St. Lawrence College: in Belle- ville, Ute says that for herself, spinning and weaving will "probably only be a hobby. When she returns to Germany this fall, she will study - languages at uni- versity. In the meantime, she is enjoying her first visit to Canada, and the chance to learn the fascinating craft of spinning and weaving under the direction of an expert. editorial comments (From page5) line. |f Britain's response is anything less than tough, what's to stop any other country from doing the same thing somewhere else in the world. Canada's role so far has been low key in the hopes ~ that Argentina and Britain can negotiate their way out before they start shooting. But if the situation worsens, maybe it will be about time for this country to get up off its back legs and let the world know just who we consider our friends and allies to be.
