May 5, 1982 -- 9 Uxbridge Beverages move into Peterborough area An Uxbridge soft drink bottler is acquiring a second franchise to bottle .and market Coca-Cola and allied brands in the neighbouring Peterborough territory. The announcement'was made April 30in a joint state- ment by Neville Kirchmann, president and chief execu- tive officer of Coca-Cola Ltd. and H.E. (Butch) Orser and R.J. (Bob) Marshall, princi- pals of Uxbridge Beverages Limited, which will begin servicing the Peterborough territory as of June 1. The change in ownership will not result in any staff changes at Peterborough, Mr. Orser said, adding that New system coming for vehicle registrations An amendment to The Highway Traffic Act, pro- posing a new vehicle regis- tration system, was intro- duced in the Legislature by Ontario's Minister of Trans- portation and Commun- ications James Snow. Under the system, sched- uled to begin on Dec.1, 1982, licence plates will stay with the owner, not the vehicle. Owners will keep the licence plates currently on their vehicles, transferring them to new vehicles when their old models are scrapped or sold. "Along with this plate-to- owner concept, we're also introducing a system of staggered renewals," con- tinued Snow. "This coming licence renewal period will be the last time motorists will have to stand in long lines in late February to get their licence plate validation 1980 PONTIAC SUNBIRD - 4 cylinder, automatic, AM/FM stereo cassette, low miles, silver. Lic. RRA 096. 1977 Monte Carlo 350 automatic, red & white, two tone. Lic. LPD 189. stickers. "So, beginning Dec. 1, 1982, motor vehicle regis- trations will be pro-rated on the birthdate of the register- ed owners and by 1983 will automatically come up for renewal on each owner's birthdate. In the case of vehicles registered to a company, another renewal date may be selected, or several dates assigned for a certain number of vehicles in their fleet. . "When it comes time to renew, owners will pay a single registration fee for all passenger vehicles and it will no longer be based on the size of the vehicle engine, as is currently the case. A lesser single fee will be- payable for passenger vehicles registered in north- ern Ontario. Owners of commercial vehicles under 3000 kg, mopeds and motor- cycles will also pay flat fees," said Snow. The new motor vehicle registration system will also enable MTC to deny a re- newal of registration for motorists with outstanding parking tickets, or those who issue NSF cheques for our agents or the ministry. "Since the new system will be tied together by a new online computer network serving every licnece issuing agent in the province, a far broader range of services to the public will be available at every office," concluded Snow. Other benefits will include the elimination of parking tickets or summonses going to former owners of vehicles whose ownership wasn't transferred, as well as the ministry's ability to provide the publice, police and courts with more accurate and reliable vehicle information. Where previously goods were being shipped in from Toronto, they will now be produced at the Uxbridge plant 'yielding economies of scale through increased utili- zation and production capacity," Mr. Orser said. Expansion of the Uxbridge territory to include Peter- borough, 'at a time when many other businesses are cutting back,' said Mr. Kirchmann, 'represents endorsements of both the proven entrepreneurial skills of the two men and of our commitment to the independent bottler system." On a national basis, 56 independent contract bottlers produce about 50 per cent of all Coca-Cola and other company brands such as Sprite, Tab Cola, Fresca, Fanta and Hi-C consumed in Canada. Mr. Orser spent 13 years with Coca-Cola Ltd., before joining an independent bottler of Coke in 1966. In 1981, he and Mr. Marshall, who had spent the previous 17 years with Coca-Cola Ltd., acquired the Uxbridge franchise. In addition, Mr. Orser is the sole shareholder of Penetang Bottling Company (1979) Limited, which also bottles Coca-Cola and allied products.
