Brian VanCamp returned home on Friday after spend- ing three months on an exchange in Matane, Quebec. On Saturday night Dale VanCamp left for three months Junior Farmer exchange to England and Europe. Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Hoskin were Sunday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Al Hoskin and family of Bow- manville. Mr. and Mrs. Neil Malcolm attended a special Church service at Welcome United Church on Sunday morning when their daughter Mary Lou Kellogg was received into member- ship there by transfer of membership. Mrs. Madeline Brown of Belleville was a weekend guest of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Gibson and family. -. vd " -., / v tng - on I1#'s Circus Time Mr, and Mrs. Harold Wheeler have returned home from Florida and are spéend- "ing a little stay with Connie and Ernie Swain. Their friend will be interested to learn that they have sold their home in Manooth and now have a summer home at Goreski"s Beach, Scugog Island. Also good to know that Connie Swain is recover- ing nicely from her surgery in late winter. Marilyn Duff and two friends returned home on Friday from a weeks vacation in Jamacia. Bride-to-be, Janice Craw- ford was a busy girl over the weekend. On Saturday after- noon she was guest of honour for a bridal shower attended by former school chums held at the home of Mrs. Linda Bradburn. Saturday evening her aunt Mrs. Lorna Edger- ton hosted a family shower in Janice's honour. Sunday afternoon she was honoured The Oshawa Shrine Club are holding their annual 3-Ring Circus this Saturday at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. This event is always a favourite of the kids. There are three shows, times can be seen in an ad in this weeks Star. Above, one of the wild tigers that will perform at the circus. by another shower hosted by Mrs. Eileen McLaughlin. This shower was attended by friends of the area. The General meeting of the U.C.W. was held at the Church on Wednesday evening, April 28. Scripture was read by Peggy Larmer. Take time to be kind and help others was stressed. A motion was passed to give the O.N.O. $200. to help install a new commercial range in the Recreation Cente. Mr. Alf Brown from St. John Ambulance on first aid, new methods and treat- ment for burns and poisons. He gave the phone numbers for emergencies-Ambulance Zenith 90,000 and O.P.P. 50,000. The meeting closed with benediction. There are still some places on the bus trip sponsored by the Blackstock Girl Guides to Niagara Falls to see the Spring Blossoms. Please note that this bus trip is sponsored by the Guides for adults - it is not a trip for the girls so don't be afraid of having to cope with a bus of noisy teenagers. The date is Thursday, May 13th. The itinery will include a winery, a special craft show and flower exhibit, the Falls and supper at a restaurant. On Sunday, May 16th at 7:30 p.m. in the Recreation Centre, Blackstock, Joap and Harvey Graham will present an illustrated travelogue of their recent trip to South Africa. Refresh- ments will be served. Donations will go to the Blackstock Girl Guide Travel Fund. Everyone is welcome to attend this interesting evening. The Borelians are busy . presenting their play last weekend and again this coming weekend. Some of the stars are our own Beth Schryburt, Caroline Carnahan, Carol Harnis and Jackie Danter. This coming Friday evening, the Nestleton U.C.W. is sponsoring a Concert presented by the paper. Near the end of the meeting the leaders discuss- ed with the club where we should have our outing. Report of another 4-H Unit - We opened the 4-H meeting with the 4-H pledge. The roll call was given and the minutes of the last meet- ing were read. We then learned about wild edibles in the field, marsh and woods. Everyone tasted tea made from plant leaves and also some chokecherry jelly. The leaders demon- strated how to make fruit leathers and told how to dry fruit in the sun and in the oven. Several members then volunteered to make different kinds of fruit leather and bring it to the next meeting. Both groups decided what they were going to serve their parents at the "cook-out" after which the meeting closed. Last week was Education Week. On Monday evening, a fine number of parents, grandparents, and friends attended the excellent Spring-up Concert when the choirs, band and instrument- alists all performed very well. Again on Thursday a fine number attended the School's Junior Science Fair where the students of the Junior grades displayed excellent projects. Winners were Frances Grove on Maple Syrup, Bryan Beatty on soap making, Jason Kyte and Mike Stanley on Kiln Drying of Lumber and Louise Wilson and Paula Van on Astronomy. During the week there were many guests speaking to the students on various subjects. Last Saturday, May 1, The Blackstock Lions held their first Anniversary dance. Approximatley 120 Lions and their guests attended the celebration enjoying a dinner provided by the 0.N.0. followed by a Western Dance.
