They say there have been enough accidents and close calls at the intersection, and it may be just a matter of time before somebody is seriously hurt or killed. Council awards Brown new contract for garbage pickup Scugog Township council has approved a new contract for garbage collector Edgar Brown which will run from May 1 of this year through to October 1, 1983. The by-law approving the new contract was passed by council at the regular meet- ing April 26. Mr. Brown has been under contract to the Township for garbage collection in Wards two, three and part of Ward four, for the past couple of years." The new contract was awarded without calling tenders, and Mayor Jerry - Taylor says this decision by council was based on the fact that the Township has been very pleased with the level of service provided by Mr. Brown in the past. "The Township is not legally obliged to call tenders for this, and Mr. " Brown has been doing a good job for wus," said Mayor Taylor. - He said Township staff and members of council receive very few complaints from the public about the garbage collection in Scugog. The new contract covers about 1600 commercial and residential pick-ups in Port Perry at a weekly cost of 50 cents each. In Ward three (Scugog Island) where there are about 1018 pick-ups, the cost is 34 cents with an increase to 37 cents per weekly pick- up on October 1. In Ward four, there are about 950 pick-ups and the contract calls for 50 cents per week with an increase to 55 cents October 1. There are no changes in the days when garbage is picked up in the various parts of the Township. The contract calls for the collector to have a back-up truck in case of mechancial failure to the regular vehicles. Fires (From pagel) And it was a very busy weekend for the Port Perry department as well, as men were called out a half dozen times on Saturday and twice on Sunday to put out grass and rubbish fires that got out of control. Captain Penney said the weekend fires did not result in any property loss; but the high winds Saturday could have led to a serious situation. He said according to the by-laws, any Township resident wanting to burn trash or grass, should first check with the Fire depart- ment, and guarantee that the fire will be well supervised to keep it from getting out of control. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed. May 5 1982 -- 3 Residents want stop signs at intersection Residents who live in the Paxton-Bigelow area of Port Perry are tired of the number of accidents and close calls at that inter- section, and they want Town- ship council to remove the Yield signs and replace them with Stop signs. Residents say there have been several accidents at the intersection over the past couple of years, the latest last Thursday afternoon. Although the accidents have not been too serious, people living in the area fear it is just a matter of time before somebody is killed. There are Yield signs on the east-west streets in that section of Port Perry which cross Bigelow Street, but residents say Paxton is very heavily travelled because it leads to the Community Hospital and the Medical Associates clinic across the street from the hospital. One resident who lives on 'the corner of the two streets said she often sees cars "sail right through the inter- section without even slowing down." They believe that ideally the intersection should have four-way stop signs, and at least the yields on Paxton must be replaced with Stop signs. Residents of the area say they are angry and frus- trated that the situation has not been dealt with, and they plan to petition Scugog Township council in the very near future.
