May 12, 1982 -- 9 Espey raps lower priced housing proposals Scugog Township should discourage any moderate priced housing proposal for the north end of Cochrane Street in Port Perry because the people who can buy this housing create too many problems, That was the viewpoint of Ward 2 councillor Robert Espey during discussion Monday afternoon on a pro- posal for 20 townshouse units on a piece of land at the north end of Cochrane Street, just to the east of the present senior citizens apartment buildings. "If you allow low priced housing there, I can tell you the kind of people that will be there. That may be snobbish, but that is realistic," said M.l. MACHINE SHOP councillor Espey. He went on to say that any housing development for that piece of property "should be consistent with the remainder of Cochrane Street.".. And he said, if a developer wants to build townhouses, 'they should be in the $80,000 to $100,000 price range, not the $40,000 price range." Although other members of council did not state their positions quite as bluntly as councillor Espey, the town- house proposal got virtually no support from the council. Councillor Lawrence Mal- colm said the concept of townhouses is all right as far as heiis concerned, but he *OPENING* MONDAY, MAY 17th NOTICE - CHANGE OF ADDRESS to Irvine Jewell Construction -- COMPLETE HEAD RE-BUILDING -- (Regional Road 8 - Port Perry ! . would like to see the number reduced from 20 to 16. And he "said the cul-de-sac would create problems for proper snow removal in winter. This was not the first development proposal coun- cil has seen for this property. Over the past few years, there have been plans for apartments, row houses and even single family homes. However, none of the plans has been developed beyond the drawing board. Ward I councillor Neil Hunter said there could be advantages to this kind of housing if it allows families the chance to purchase a home. Both Mayor Jerry Taylor and area councillor Don Crosier said they would. like to see apartments built in Port Perry as there seems to be a real demand. However, they acknow- ledged that with high inter- est rates and rent controls, developers are not building apartment units in Port Perry or anywhere else, be- cause of poor return on investment. Councillor Espey said he would also be opposed to any plan to build apartments on that piece of property. The proposed plan called for 20 units in three blocks, with each unit having two or three bedrooms. There was no indication from the plan in front of council as to what the price of the units would be. On more than one occasion during his first term in office councillor Espey has spoken out strongly in favour of promoting higher priced housing rather than lower or moderate priced develop- ments. A lawyer, he owns a home on the south end of Cochrane 'Street near Queen Street which is currently up for sale at an asking price of $110,000. Washing away winter's grime The streets in downtown Port Perry got a much needed cleaning last Friday morning when crews from the Township works department wet the pavement down and swept-up the accumulated dirt and sand from the winter. The windy days should not cause as much problem to shoppers now and most of the sand has been removed. Another definite sign that Spring is here to stay.
