RA EAP I A LEAR AAPA ROT YAN, > NSSRON Local student receives | Honourable Mention at Canada Science Fair Iris Nimz is the first Port Perry High School student ever to win an award at the annual Canada Wide Science Fair which was held last month at York University in Toronto. Iris, a grade 10 honours student earned an honour- able mention in the intermediate life sciences division for her experiment on Chemotaxis in the Drosophila. That, by the way, is the scientific way of saying the effects of certain chemical substances on the orientation and habits of the fruit fly. Iris earned a berth in the Canada Wide Fair by placing first in the Durham Region finals, and she also won awards from the Durham Veterinarians Association and the Durham College Faculty. . She says it was a thrill to spend a week at York University living in residence there with the top 300 science fair students from all over Canada. Science Fair competitions are nothing new for this 15 year old student. She placed in the top three in grades 7, 8 and 9, winning awards from the Womens Teachers Association and Ontario Hydro along the way. But this year was her first trip to the National Finals, ET ERT EE eg and gaining an honourable mention is quite an accom- plishment. Iris says that already she is starting to think about next year's experiment, and her goal is to reach the Canada wide finals again and improve on this year's achievement. As might be expected, maths and sciences are her favourite subjects and she keeps her grades above 90 per cent. She is no slouch in the other subjects as well, with marks over 80 per cent. This fall, one of her poems will be published in a book of poetry by Ontario students. Iris, who lives with her parents west of Greenbank, hopes to attend Waterloo University after completing grade 12 next year. Her ultimate aim is a doctrate in mathematics and a career either in teaching or in computers. To get early admittance to Waterloo in the fall of 1983, Iris will complete grade 12 math this summer and finish grade 13 maths next school year. She began working on the chemotaxis experiment for the Science Fairs last Qct- ober. She had to order the fruit flies from a Toronto laboratory, but when they arrived by mail last Jan- uary, only six of the 20 had survived. 4 That really didn't matter all that much as by the time the experiment was over, those six flies had multiplied to about 5000. Essentially, the exper- iment consisted of recording the behavior of the flies when exposed to a wide range of chemical substances found in fruits, sugar, milk and milk products, and alcohol. The experiment found that fruit flies prefer sub- stances with yeast and those which ferment easily such as red cherries. The also like milk sugars (lactose) and red wines with low alcohol contents. But they didn't like spirits with more than 19 per cent alcohol, and they don't seem to like cheese, either, Iris says she decided to conduct this experiment after doing some research on the topic and discussing it with her science teachers at high school. ~- Just what she plans to do for next year's Science Fair competitions could be any- body's guess, for in the past she has prepared exhibits on bees, lasers, surface tensions and of course, fruit flies.
