14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday June 15, 1982 Sport Greenbank new ball park opens officially Thursday, June 24 Greenbank are having a special event in their park on Thursday, June 24th to officially open their new ball field floodlights and wash rooms. - They have been most fortunate in securing the National Fastball team of the Virgin Islands to play an exhibition fastball game against the Greenbank Gamblers on this occasion. The Virgin Island team will be touring in the Oshawa area that week and have agreed to participate in the park opening. Opening ceremonies will start at 7:45 p.m. and the Virgin Island vs. Gambler game will commence at 8:00 p.m. All fastball fans should plan to attend this game, as very seldom do we have a chance to watch National teams from other countries play in this area. During the past week, the Greenbank Gamblers split two league games. On Mon- day night they supported pitcher Ken Irvines nifty four hitter with some solid first inning hitting of their own and dropped Zephyr A's MolJacks PeeWees open by a score of 4-1. Greg Rodd led the 8 hit Gambler attack with 2 hits, with singles going to Bill Thomson, Jay Williams, John Foster, Don Beaton, Trevor Till and Ken Irvine. However, on Wednesday night, the team travelled to Sunderland and the Sunder- land Harvesters handed Greenbank their first loss of the season by downing them by a 4-2 score. The Gamblers could only manage 5 hits off Sunderland pitcher Paul Gibb with Don Beaton, Neil Rodd, John Foster, Denny Tullock and Trevor Till each picking up one hit. Meanwhile, Mike Carnival and Andy Doble led the potent Sunderland offense against pitcher Elmer Spence who went the distance for Greenbank. Not only did the Gamblers lose the game, but they also lost the services for a few weeks of third baseman Dennis Romeril when he severely damaged his throw- ing hand while attempting to snare a wicked line drive off the bat of Chuck Thompson. Fortunately the hand was not broken and once the stitches are removed the swelling goes down, Dennis should be back in the Gambler lineup. Defeats and victories On June 1st, Port Perry hosted Parkview of Oshawa and were defeated 8-7. After leading 7-4 going into the 8th inning errors started plaquing our boys as they gave up 4 runs. Trevor Till started on the mound giving way to Phil Robinson in the 4th. Offensively Peter Christie had 2 singles and Trevor Till, Mark Goreski, and Stan Glass each had a single, Peter Qosterholt season with four wins by Carol Wilbur The Mother Jackson Pee Wees are off to a fine start with 4 wins and a tie in 5 starts. i Under the leadership of Garnet Warriner, Ted Culbert and Fred Cockerton, the boys are playing good ball. Greg Warriner has moved behind the plate in the catchers position and Jeff Cockerton and David Burnett are on the mound. The nucleus of the team are last year boys with the exception of Craig Venning who is first year. Stephen Langille who has just joined the ranks this year is playing well. We have picked up a couple of recruits in Johnny Miller, a pitcher and Trevor Clarke, a fielder from Uxbridge, as they don't have a Pee Wee team this year. The rest of the boys are Craig Menzies, Lee Wilbur, Bobby Orr, Stephen Durham, Travis Adameryk, Ron Brown, and David Culbert. We wish the MoJacks well in the season to come as they are sure off to a good start. Goreski's still on winning streak It took 11 innings, but Goreski's Insulation kept their unbeaten streak alive as they nipped Oshawa Juniors 2-1 in a fastball match played at the Port Perry diamond last Friday evening. In what turned out to be a classic pitchers duel, Russ Korbak got the win for Goreski's, going the distance and giving up just three hits, Jim Chilvers was tagged for the loss, but he turned in a strong game on the mound, giving up just four hits. The winning run came in the 11th inning after George Redshaw tagged a double, advanced to third on a pass- ed ball, and then scampered home on a Phil Solomon single. Darryl Hudgins and Bruce Myers were the only other batters to get hits off Chilvers. For the Juniors, Bernie Nicholls had a pair of hits off Korbak, Goreski's with a 6-0 record now is in front in league standings, followed by Genosha Hotel with 5-3; the Juniors 3-3; Mothers Pizza 2-2; and Lindsay 0-7. Next game in Port Perry for Goreski's is this Friday evening at 8:30 with Mother's Pizza the opposition. chipped in with a double. On June 8th, Malmont Midgets travelled to Whitby to play Whitby Legionaires and were soundly defeated 11-0. After 5 outstanding innings by pitcher Phil Robinson, errors seemed to be the order of the day again. The Port Perry bats were silent as John Annis, the Whitby pitcher struck out 15. Trevor Till had a triple. On June 14, Port Perry travelled to Kingston to play in their first tournament. Their first opponent was Sharbot Lake whom they defeated 2-0, Phil Robinson again pitching a strong game with some good defensive play by his teamates. Robert Burnett playing his first game of the year looked very solid as did Peter Oosterholt and Peter Christie. Port Perry got their 2 runs in the for Malmont Midgets second inning as Brian Henricks walked, Peter Oosterholt walked, stole third and scored on a throw- ing error by the catcher. The bats again were silent as we only had 2 hits, but the boys hung in for the win. The second game of the day, Port Perry met .Inverrary and we skunked them 9-0. Trevor Till was on the mound for Port Perry pitching a very good game, but received no help from his team mates as errors again became our nemisis, also the bats were silent again as we only had singles by Peter Christie, Mark Goreski and John Vaz.
