In the absence of the president Margaret Mathews, Margaret Davis chaired the meeting. The special guests for the evening were Betty Jean Blythe of Brooklin and Barbara Williamson of Ash- burn, who told of some one day bus trips which they are arranging. One special one is going to Kitchener Market and factory outlets in the area on Saturday, July 17th. If you would like to go contact Barbara Porter 655-4652 soon, these tours sound like a lot of fun. A happy visit was enjoyed over the tea cups and lunch. The ladies Bible class met on June 9th in the evening at the home of Bernice Gardner. The president, Aldeen Wick opened the meeting with a lovely wor- ship service and poem. Catherine Humphrey led in prayer. Bernice Gardner was in charge of the program and she read a poem about neighbours, the topic was prepared by Jean McEntyre and given by Margaret Davis. It was taken from Galations and entitled "About being Human." It was a good helpful message. Joan Knight read a poem called Love your Neighbour." Reta Davidchuck played two lovely piano solos and then played for a sing song that we all enjoyed. The next meeting will be in Sept- ember. Mr. and Mrs. John Cincurak and Mr. Jeff Gard- ner attended a reception in honour of Mrs. Gayle Climpson-Kennedy who recently graduated as a doctor from McMaster Medical School, Hamilton. The reception took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Climpson, R.R.1, Sharon, Ontario. Mr. and Mrs. E. Heron, Mrs. Robert Rowe and Penny visited last Friday with Mr. and Mrs. Allen Ness of Omemee also Mrs. Reg MacGillivray of Brighton. Visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Gardner and Jean recently were, Mr. and Mrs. David Tripp and children and Mrs. Irma Tripp of Strathroy and Mr. Rees Williams of Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Gardner attended the wedding last Saturday of Miss Cathy Mchaffy and Mr. Donald Knight at Port Perry. A very lovely retirement tea was held in Meadowcrest School last Friday afternoon June 11th for Ellen (Nellie) J. Hopkins. The Gym was decorated by the school children like a garden with potted flowers and trees, styrofoam arch- ways and interesting art work. The ladies pouring tea were former teachers of Meadowcrest, Nina Steer, Anne Milner, Ellen Bird and Evelyn Wilson and the lunch was served by the girls from the Enrichment English classes. The presentations were made by Principal, Mrs. Joy Bain. Several gifts from the various English classes Nellie has taught in the past four years. The gift from the staff was a beautiful silk floral arrangement. A lovely living yellow rose bouquet was from her son, Maurice and daughter-in-law Sandy. The gift from friends and staff was a painting of the Gostick farm home, Nellie's birthplace, located on the homestead on the 7th Con- cession of Pickering. The homestead has been in the family since 1832. The paint- ing was done by talented artist Marta Gill of Glen Major. Nellie gave a very sincere area news Thank you speech and told of some of her experiences in her over 32 years of teaching in local schools, Chalk Lake, Locust Hill, Claremont and in Meadowcrest since 1968. 127 attended the tea - among them were 11 teachers and librarians and 4 of the 5 principals in whose schools Nellie taught. We all wish Nellie and her husband, Bill many happy years of well deserved retirement. Awarded road contract Dagmar Construction of Markham has been awarded a $571,000 contract for grading and paving of a section of Highway 12 from Highway 47 through Green- bank The announcement of the awarding of the contract was made recently by the pro- vincial ministry of transpor- tation. The work on the 9-10th of a mile stretch was to get underway June 1 and is slated for completion early this fall. BRINGS YOU CLOSER The work will bring the highway up to current design standards by widening the driving surface and shoulders, improving drain- age, adding curb and gutter and providing sidewalks where needed. The intersection of the 11th Concession in the Village of Greenbank will be improved through the addition of turn lanes for both north and south traffic.
