| | Students donate to hospital Students at Port Perry High School have pitched in to help achieve the new expansion at the Community Memorial Hospital. Eddie Raffin, vice president, and Suzanne Doupe, president of the Student's Council presented hospital officials a cheque for $500 last Wednesday, money the students had raised throughout the year from various activities. Seen here accepting the cheque from Suzanne is hospital administrator David Brown, and board chairman Jim Marlowe. Mr. Brown said that they were very pleased that the students wanted to help with the Scugog Township council will decide in the next couple of weeks exactly how to spend a $41,000 provincial grant from the Ontario Municipal Employment Program. The grant is to be applied to labour only on work on public buildings and facili- ties, which otherwise would not have been completed this year. Council decided Monday that $15,000 of the total will be used by the Scugog Museum, and director Jane Baird said this will include painting, repairs, renova- tions, and moving a new building to the museum site PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday June 15, 1982 -- 3 : Scugog gets $41,000 on Scugog Island. "We have plenty to do with this money," Mrs. Baird told council. Just how the remainder of the grant will be spent was not decided on Monday, but some of the suggestions offered by councillors in- cluded painting of commun- ity halls, the Latcham Centre in Port Perry, and even such things as grass cutting and weed trimming in old cemeteries maintained by the Township. Other municipalities in the area to receive grants include Uxbridge $33,000, Brock $24,000, and Pickering $107,000. Across Ontario, more than $35 million will be allocated to municipalities this year under the terms of the program, which is designed to help ease the unemploy- ment problems. Over the past few years, members of council have seen at least half a dozen development proposals for that particular piece of pro- perty: everything from sin- gle family homes to apart- ment blocks. The plan unveiled Monday seemed to be the most sat- isfactory one that council has seen, as councillors Crosier, Williams and Mal- colm all said it appears feasable and practical. Curtis Carter, president of the Association, says in a letter sent to all municipali- ties that 'the provincial budget indicates a complete lack of understanding for local initiatives towards fiscal accountability." The letter goes on to say the '"'government has forgot- ten that its own legislation prohibits local government from deficit financing." And it calls the application of sales taxes 'devastating on local government finances."
