They said there must be some mistake. We were then told that it was our fault because we had tried to enter a class we were not eligible for. This was a false accusation because we were prepared to enter the 17 and under class. This incident never would have happened if this point had been considered before now. I feel that somewhere on the entry form it should be stated as of when the ages for the catagories are taken. If not on the entry form they should at least inform all of the registrators properly. EDITOR'S NOTE: Canoe the Nonquon officials were asked about the incident. They say that nearly every year, some sort of mis-understanding develops, and that while it is always regrettable, the rules must be followed in fairness to all. They say that the first hour of registration is always hectic and if the impression was given that a 15-year old boy was eligible for the 14 and under class, it was not intentional, and apologies have already been made. They say that steps will certainly be taken to clarify this point in the future. Regional Council ignores pleas of Newcastle (From page 2) approving the mall came from Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rickard and coun- cillors Diane Hamre and Anne Cowman. In an impassioned speech, councillor Hamre told Regional council that New- castle is not negative to new development. "Leave us alone in New- castle, to make our_own decisions. Don't - take the right to survice out of our hands," she stated. Councillor Cowman rattled off a long list of statistics to illustrate that' Bowmanville and area already has a ¢on- siderable amount of vacant commercial space (about 68,000 square feet) and she charged that approving the mall would lead to more vacant retail space and bankruptcies of existing businesses. "I urge you in the strong- .est terms to support the business people, the council and the people of New- castle," she said to her fellow Regional councillors. The only member of Regional council from New- castle to support the project . was Maurice Prout, who pointed to the construction jobs the development would create and the 250 perman- ent jobs once the project is completed. Both Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor and Regional coun- cillor Lawrence Malcolm voted with the majority to approve the Official Plan amendment. However, neither took part in the long - debate in the council chambers prior to the vote last week. May We Introduce... Our New Services! NO NEED TO TIE UP PRECIOUS $'s IN INVENTORY.
