Softball Association plans Midget event Final preparations are now completed for the Port Perry Minor Softball Assoc- iation's 7th Annual Midget Boy's Softball Tournament to be held at the two Lake- front Parks on Friday, Sat- urday and Sunday, July 16,17 and 18. This years line-up of teams brings to-gether sixteen of the top Midget Clubs in Ontario. Since the age has been raised by one year by the Ontario Amateur Softball Association, many of the same boys who have provid- ed such fine softball in last years tournament will again be returning. Tournament Chairman, Wayne Venning feels this years entries brings to- gether the strongest group of teams to be assembled in the seven year history of the Midget Tournament. The favourite again this year would have to be the strong entry from Napanee who won the Tournament last year and represented Ontario in the Canadian Midget Championship. Other powerful teams who will give Napanee some Malmont Midget squad plays well in Jordan tourney On Tuesday June 29 the Malmont Farms Midgets started the week off right by defeating Bell Canada 10-2. Mark Goreski was on the mound for Port and struck out 7 in getting the win. On Thursday July 1st the team travelled to Brooklin and lost in a lopsided game. It was hoped that in this game Port got rid of all of their mis- takes because they were pre- paring for the Midget Elimination Tournament on the weekend. In the first game of the Elimination Tournament Port's bad luck continued as they lost to Granthan 12-3. Phil Robinson pitched a strong game for Port but was not helped by his teammates in the field or at the plate. Ken Harman and Peter Christie were the only two Port batters to get hits. The next morning Port faired much better against King- ston Townships as they won the game 54 in 8 innings. Mark Goreski pitched a fine game on the mound giving up 8 hits and striking out 9. The team showed good signs as they were able to fight back to win the game. King- ston scored in the 7th to tie the score and scored 2 in the 8th to take the lead. But with determination, Port was able to fight back and scored 3 in the 8th to win. Keith Trembley drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly scoring Trevor Till. Till led the hit parade with a home run and triple with single hits going to Brian Hendricks, Harman Christie! Rob Burnett and Stan Glass. s . Later in the day Port had their revenge on Granthan by winning 13-9. Goreski started on the mound but tired and was relieved by Phil Robinson. The bats really came alive in this game with 10 hits. Also the batters were very selective by drawing 12 walks. Lead- ing the team in hits were Tremblay with 3, Burnett and Hendricks each with 2 and Elliott, Harman, Till, (Turnto page 15) competion are Kitchener, Grimsby, Agincourt, King- ston Township, Don Victoria, . and Hamilton. Some new entries in this years tourna- ment will no doubt give some of the top teams problems are New Hamburg, Oakville, Meaford, Minesing, and two powerful clubs from north Bracebridge and Garson (north of Sudbury). The local entries may surprise a few of the visiting teams as Port Perry, Oshawa and Lindsay are all capable of taking home the Championship. This years Tournament will be four Divisions, with four teams in each group; each winner will meet in semi-final play, leading to a two team Championship game. All the action starts on Friday night July 16 with Lindsay playing Port Perry and Oshawa meeting Don Victoria at 7:30 on both 'Diamonds while a 9.0'clock a great game is expected as Napanee meets Agincourt. Plan to attend all the three days of action. Summerlea golf by Jean Skerratt Summer has finally arrived.
