And on Monday night at "Yankee Stadium North", the Gamblers played almost flawlessly and shut out the Goodwood-Uxbridge Bowl- ing Team by a 2-0 score. The team backed the three hit pitching of Ken Goreski with seven hits of their own and were full value for the win. John Foster had two singles while Gary Baker had a triple, Dennis Romeril League standings as of July 17th are as follows: Team Played Won Lost Tied pis. The following night the Greenbank Squad went to Goodwood to meet the league leading Goodwood team in a show down for first place. And only the most unusual circumstances kept the Gamblers from taking over first spot in the league. Lefty Ken Irvine was razor sharp in this game and head- ing into the bottom of the seventh (and last) inning, he had pitched a perfect game, not allowing Goodwood a hit or a baserunner. This excellent pitching had been backed by some timely Greenbank hitting by Jay Williams, Brian Lee and John Foster and along with a few walks issued by the Goodwood pitcher, Green- bank enjoyed a 2-0 lead. The way that Irvine was setting down the Goodwood batters, (he had struck out 14 in the first six innings), the final three outs seemed to be no more than routine. However, at this point fate intervened and the first batter in the last inning hit a slow grounder to shortstop Don Beaton who fired to first base for what the Gamblers thought was the first out of the inning. However, the umpire felt otherwise and took exception to the Green- bank protests, and promptly ejected pitcher Ken Irvine from the game. Suddenly the perfect game that Irvine was striving for turned to complete disaster as Greenbank did not have another player to insert in Irvine's place and the game was forfeited to the Good- wood team. Greenbank did have eleven players at the game but the two extra players had been used up in pinch hitting roles. A combination of shift work, vacations and Gambler players coaching minor league teams account- ed for the Gambler's "Short Bench". However, this setback will not stop the Gambler team PRINCE ALBERT AUTO CENTRE - Cars Painted - PLUS MATERIALS CALL: 985-3311 THE CLUB ANNRENE Scugog Island - Port Perry "Under New Management" Featuring Live Bands & Dancing Every Weekend!
