McLaughlin is reminiscent of a gracious era gone by." The luxurious 55-room mansion with sprawling lawns and picturesque gardens is located at 270 Simcoe Street, North in Oshawa and has been open to the public since 1972. "When Colonel R.S. McLaughlin died on January 6, 1972 in his 101st year, he bequeathed Parkwood to the Oshawa General Hospital. Under the administration of the Parkwood Foundation, a non-profit organization, the estate is maintained and operated for the benefit of the public. Colonel McLaughlin was born in Enniskillen, Ontario in 1871. He was the son of Robert McLaughlin who founded the McLaughlin Carriage Works. Later, convinced of the success of the automobile industry, Colonel McLaughlin established in 1907, the McLaughlin Motor Car Company. In 1918 this became part of General Motors with Colonel McLaughlin as President. He amassed a fortune and many organizations have since benefited from his generosity. The home was built in 1917 by Darling and Pearson, the same firm that designed the Parliament buildings in Ottawa.
