Mike Breaugh, Oshawa and George Ashe, Durham West met with members of Durham Region District Health Council's Executive Committee last week to discugs the current status of Durham Region's Hospitals. "The purpose of the meet- ing", stated Howard Hall, District Health Council Chairman "is to keep you informed and up to date on the status of issues affecting the health care of Durham Region; to provide you with our position on these issues; and to seek your comments." One of the serious con- cerns discussed at the meet- ing is the fact that no commitment has been received from the Minister of Health towards the planning of the Ajax-Picker- ing Hospital bed expansion project. A recommendation requesting the Ministry's immediate approval for the planning process was sub- mitted to the Minister in January 1981 along with many other recommend- ations of Council on the current and future health care needs for Durham Region. Mr. Hall stated that members of Council are up- by Mrs. Earl Reader A week from to-day we will be into September and pre- paring for a new life style in work and organizational routine. Where has the summer gone? This Wednesday the Head U.C.W. and its family members will meet again in a social evening with corn roast at the Community Hall prior to the beginning of regular meetings. The "Grace" U.C.W. will start its regular meetings by a noon luncheon at the home of Mrs. Florence Fralick on September 8 after day school has started again. The United Church Sunday School will get started on the first September Sunday. There will be new members on the staff. After Church, parents will be invited to share a social time with the staff and scholars and learn the aims of the new study curriculum. Consequently, the project will be much delayed causing further problems. These concerns have been communicated to the Minister of Health along with Council's request for approval in principle of the project so that the planning can get underway to enable the hospital to meet the projected time frame. Mr. Ashe stated that he agreed with Council's con- cerns and supported the request for approval in principle for expansion of the Ajax-Pickering Hospital and would be taking the matter up further with Mr. Gross- man. Mr. Breaugh shared Council's concerns on the hospital situation stating that there was a back in the Region's hospitals causing overflow into the emergency departments and some relief was badly needed: With respect to other Scugog Island news get an early start. Supplies cost a lot and it will be nice to see them used regularly. Last week end Mrs. Reta Reader travelled to Toronto, Orangeville and Shelburne to have a re-union with former school friends and to celebrate the 50th Wedding Anniversary of one. These 4 friends boarded together for a year and continue to have re-unions. Tho' life has drawn them in different directions, they still have the same basic interests. Last week, four and one half kilograms of used stamps were sent to the Leprosy Mission, so start saving again. hospitals in the Region Mr. Hall stated that the Ministry did offer some funding dollars for capital projects to the Uxbridge, Port Perry, and the Whitby J.0. Ruddy hospitals. Although in other areas of the Province the Ministry provided two thirds of the capital dollars required, in Durham's par- ticular circumstance the offer was much lower causing some concerns as to where the additional dollars needed would come from. However, the Uxbridge and Port Perry Hospital Boards accepted the offer hoping to raise the remaining dollars required through a community fund raising campaign. To date the Whitby J.0. Ruddy Hospital Board has not made a final decision but has 'enlisted advice from consultants regarding the feasibility based on the dollar im- plications. Vice Chairman of Council, Tom Cowan, stated that the final plans for the Bowman- ville Hospital are ready for submission to the Minister of Health. - He remarked that Bowmanville is eager to re- instate its hospital to the condition it was in prior to the fire in 1980. Another serious concern of District Health Council dis- cussed at the meeting is that of the hospital budget deficit situation of approximately $1.8 million. Council fears that unless the matter can be resolved between the hospitals and the Ministry: and some financial assist- ance provided, hospital services will have to be cutback thus compromising the health care of the residents of Durham Region. The Executive Committee of District Health Council is working very closely with the Ministry and hospitals to come to a satisfactory resolution to this serious problem. - District Health Council and the Local MPPs will be meeting throughout the year to exchange information and views on local issues.
