Trent - Severn news On August 23, 1982 the stored water in Trent Severn Waterway reservoir lakes amounted to an average of 68 per cent of the normal max- imum level, 3 and one half per cent less than a week earlier. This was about 3 per cent greater than the 10-year average for that date and within one half per cent of the level at that date in 1981. Reservoir flows were reduced early this week following rains on Sunday night, August 22 which added considerably to the Kawartha levels. Rain again on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 24, 25 resulted in a definite surplus situation on the Kawarthas and a con- siderable increase in flow from these lakes to control their levels. Rainfall was distributed with heavier amounts on the Kawarthas than in Haliburton as an average of the two events this past week. Reduced evaporation due to colder and wetter fall weather makes the holding of surplus more "dicey" and therefore less can be safely held at this time of year, than in the heat of summer. Much of the surplus will therefore be released to achieve safer lower levels on the Kawarthas. Scugog Township council gets back to business this coming Monday (September 13) with its first regular meeting in more than four weeks, while on Wednesday, Durham Region council will meet for the first time in eight weeks. At the next Regional meet- ing this coming Wednesday, it will be interesting to see if tempers have cooled over the eight weeks. The last Regional meeting was punctuated with a lot of name calling, jeering and accusations. Durham Region chairman Gary Herrema has declared publicly he will be seeking another term as chairman of the council. But if elected, he has stated it will be his last term. Mr. Herrema's opponent in the chairman's race two years ago, Oshawa councillor John Aker stated last week he has not decided if he will run for the job again. As of this date, no other candidates have announced their intention to jump into the fray for the top political position in the Region. The Regional chairman is . elected by the new in-coming Durham council, and this election is held at the first meeting after the municipal elections. Here in Scugog, most members of local council have made up their minds to seek re-election, but at least three have not publicly declared what seat they will be seeking. And as of this date, there have been no public declar- ations from others who may throw their hats into the political ring this fall. In Scugog's neighbouring Township to the west, Uxbridge Mayor Bill Ballinger is facing a challenge from chiropracter Dr. Morley Pitts who announced he will be in the race for the Mayor's chair. Incumbent Mayor Ballinger is well known in Scugog as the former owner of Crandell's Restaurant in Port Perry. Dr. Pitts is making his first bid for elected office. In Scugog, Mayor Jerry Taylor has stated he will be seeking another term in office (his third straight, if elected) and so far, there have been no challengers.
