Muriel Gibson had the Rural Mexicans benefit through work of ort Perry eye doctor Port Perry optometrist Dr. Arlene Hackner and two colleagues have just re- turned from a two week trip to rural Mexico where they helped improve the sight of almost 1000 Mexicans, who had never seen an eye doctor before. For Dr. Hackner, it was the second trip within a year to the poor rural section of the country about 30 miles from Guadalajara. She and her colleagues, optometrists Dr. Kim Raymond of Belleville and Dr. Shirley Kovacs of St. Thomas took about 4000 pairs of discarded prescrip- tion glasses with them. "We managed to test the eyes of about 3000 people and fitted 950 with glasses," Dr. Hackner told the Star in an interview last week. She returned to Canada on August 28. The discarded glasses from Canada were collected by school and church groups and from many individuals who read about the first trip to Mexico by Dr. Hackner a year ago which received prominent coverage in a Toronto newspaper. The three optometrists volunteered their time and expertise in the eye testing program which then in- volved matching the pre- scriptions as closely as possible to one of the pairs of discarded glasses. - Travel expenses were paid by the Ontario Teachers Federation and the Canadian Foundation for World Development. The discarded glasses improved the sight of young and old to the point where children could see the black- board in classrooms and the elderly could return to knit- ting, sewing and reading which they had not been able to do for many years because of failing eyesight. One young woman who received a pair of glasses had been forced to drop out of nursing school because she could not read the black- board. Although the people living in that part of the country are poor, the area has attrac- ted a number of retired non- Mexicans who began to express concerns about eye problems in children and the fact that even basic medical and other social services do not exist. In fact, it was through the efforts of a retired Canadian couple that the Teachers Federation and Development Foundation became involved. Dr. Hackner, who original- ly is from Uxbridge and has practised in Port Perry for the past three years, says she is not-certain at this time when she will make a third trip to Mexico to continue with this unique program. However, she does say that discarded eyeglasses are badly needed. "They certainly will be used, somewhere," she said. If you have an old pair of glasses around the house, drop them off at Dr. Hackner's office in the Medical Associates Building on Paxton St., in Port Perry. That pair of glasses could end up giving better sight to somebody, somewhere who otherwise would never have the chance at improved vision. Dr. Hackner said that on the most recent trip, the 4000 pairs of glasses were delayed a couple of days in - Mexican customs.
