September 14, 1982 yports 3 favs a Soccer season nears an end The Scugog Soccer Annual Cup Day was a success with the beautiful weather that we experienced last Sat- urday. Lots of good soccer, plenty of surprise results, crowds of cheering spec- tators and lots of happy kids all combined to make this the best cup-day yet. Minis - These little people put on a great show and their progress throughout the season augers well for the future of the club. Larry Ross, Arlen Dalby, Carol Mathews, Linda Calder, Jan Towns and Doug Suppelsa were enthusiastic coaches who did a splendid job. Each mini player was presented with a little trophy and a crest. Squirts - The first two games were rip-snorters with all four teams putting out lots of effort. In one game Sipco Oil surprised the league winners, Brian's Towing with a 1-0 victory while lowly Canadian Tire edged out the strong Royal it took a showdown before Irvine Construction emerged winners in the Atom Division. In the final Sipco Oil proved too strong for Canadian Tire and they won the Cup-Winners Trophy. All cup finalists received trophies and, of course, Brian's Towing, picked up the league winners trophies. Fred McMann, Alf and Rob Huggins, Mike Lake and Richard Drew were the coaches who with their many helpers succeeded in eventually getting their teams to produce a respect- able brand of soccer. Atoms - The league winners, Thompson Heating, were thwarted by an extremely hard working and talented Galley Fish and Chip team. The Galley kids went onto meet Irvine Con- struction who had just edged out an awfully unlucky Port Perry Printing team. In the final both teams put up a very plucky show. hey were tied at full time, tied after extra time and eventually Irvine Construction won on penalty shots. After such a Volman, Joe! Sargeant. The dedicated coaches who devoted so much time and effort with the Atoms were Wayne Hancock, James VanShegen, Karl Wilkinson and Keith Elliott. Mosquitos - This was the only division where there were no surprises and the teams ended up in the same order as they did in the league. The Kinsmen team submerged Scugog Lumber 'in the first round and though the Lions Club played their hearts out the talented Watermill Restaurant went on into the final. The Kinsmen boys were just too strong in the final and ended up with 2 sets of trophies to show for their efforts throughout the season. Pee-Wee Boys - Our 2 pee-wee teams, ATJ Ind. Tool and Fab and Garrow Chrysler met on Thursday to play their cup game and what a cracker-jack. of a game it was. The ATJ team snatched an early lead and the rest of the game seem- ingly was a never ending series of end to end thrills as the Garrow team strained every muscle to pull it back. A lovely new trophy present- ed by the Kinsmen club was presented to the ATJ lads and the Garrow team were given trophies to com- memorate their winning the Uxbridge-Scugog Peewee League. There are some very talented youngsters in (Turnto page 16) Gamblers even-up Claremont series with an 8-4 win After dropping a 2-1 decision to Claremont Legion in the opening game of their fastball semi-final series, Greenbank Gamblers rebounded last Monday night in Greenbank with an 84 win. Greenbank jumped on Claremont pitcher Darryl Norton early in the game and after two innings had an 8-1 lead. In the first inning, Dennis Romeril hit Nortons first pitch for a home run. Then Trevor Till singled, .John Foster reached base on an error by Norton, Don Beaton drew a walk to load the bases and. then Jay Williams promptly lined a three run double to centre field, The Gamblers scored four more in the second inning. Romeril started things off with a double and Till drew a base on balls. Greg Rodd - singled Romeril home. Then Foster drove in Till and Rodd with a double to right field and then scored himself when the Claremont catcher Bill Carruthers threw the ball into centre field on a pickoff attempt. Greenbank sat on this lead with only Bill Thomson and Williams picking up hits during the last four innings. Meanwhile, Claremont scrambled back to score a run in the second inning, another in the third and two more in the fifth. Ken Goreski who had been very steady on the Gambler mound, suddenly found him- self in trouble in the sixth inning when Claremont loaded the bases by beating out two bunts and drawing a walk with nobody out. At this point, Ken Irvine came on in relief-and retired the side with a force out at home plate, a strike out and a fly ball to left field. Irvine also retired the side in order in the seventh inning to preserve the win for Ken Goreski. The two left handers have given the Gamblers exceptional pitch- ing during the last few weeks. 3 Greenbank played error- less ball in this game with shortstop Don Beaton play- ing a fine defensive game for the Gamblers. This series will conclude this Monday night in Green- bank with the winner of Mondays game taking on either Uxbridge or Zephyr "A'"'s for the league championship. Meanwhile its on to Wing- ham this weekend for the Gamblers where they will be competing in the All-Ontario "C" Championships. The team. and many of their followers are leaving for Listowell this Friday after- noon. Listowell was the closest accommodation the team could secure, and the double knock out tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday in Wingham: --
