September 14, 1982 -- 15 Hockey season starts this weekend atUxbridge Oldtimers tournament by Peter Morris At age 35 the careers of most well known hockey players have entered the twilight zone. The Russian national team automatically retires it's players at age 30. (with one or two notable exceptions). National Hockey League clubs regularly "buy out' the contracts of their over 30 players. But for thousands of Canadian men, new hockey careers are just beginning at the ripe old age of 35, though the increasingly popular phenomenon - "Oldtimer's Hockey'. Locally, oldtimer's hockey is a popular and growing sport. Four oldtimer's team exist in the Port Perry - Uxbridge area, and over a dozen teams represent one part or another of Durham region at the weekend hockey tournaments which occur throughout Ontario. The Second Annual Uxbridge Black Hawk Invitational Pow Wow Oldtimer's Hockey Tournament is one such tournament and is being held Friday, Saturday and Sun- day, September 17, 18, 19 at the Uxbridge Community Centre. There are 12 teams enter- ed in this tournament competing for championship TV ATE amas > Response to the Port Perry Minor Hockey Ladies Auxiliary Skate and trophies in three levels of competition, Algonquin, Huron and Iroquois. The levels of competition are determined by the previous experience (Pro, Sr, Int, Jr. etc.) of each teams players and the past performances of the teams in other tourna- ments. In the Algonquin or "A" division Oshawa Mother's Boys, Ajax Antiques, Oldtimers compete for the D'Arcy Morden Trophy. In the Huron or "B" division, Aurora Old Colts, Markham Koho, Penetang Oldtimers and Stouffville Clippers compete for the Harshaw Clothiers Trophy. In the Iroquois or "C" division East Gwillumbury, Sudbury Pepsis, Stouffville Classics and Uxbridge Islanders compete for the Double H Cleaners Trophy. What distinguishes old- timers hockey from other forms of hockey? Certainly the pace of the game is slower than that of the local Junior '"'C" variety, but hockey is a game played with the mind as well as the legs. The experience of the players and the absence of any body contact or slap- shots places the emphasis of the game ory playmaking and individual finesse.
