XL (REA ARE 2 Coyote with rabies (From pagel) Boer of Uxbridge Nurseries just to the east, heard a commotion in his yard about midnight and came out to find the coyote attacking a part Beagle dog which was tied to a tree close to the house. Mr. De Boer shouted and the coyote backed off. But - then it stopped and stared at Mr. De Boer. He ran for the house to get a rifle but when he returned the coyote was gone. Mr. de Boer's dog has also been put in quarantine. Another resident of the area who spotted the coyote that night is Mrs. Marion Barnett who said the animal came right up to her back door and then circled around the house showing no fear. Mrs. Barnett said that later that evening the coyote attacked two guests as they drove into the yard in their car. They were not bitten. The incidents left her extremely upset and frightened to venture very far from the house. And she was very worried about Opposed to large pay hike (From page1) trustee's salaries until the end of this year. However, it appears as if a majority of the trustees want some kind of pay hike this year, he suggested a figure of $800 this year and an additional $1000 in each of the next two years, bringing the rate to $10,000 after three years. The new school board elected this fall will sit for a three year term similar to municipal councils. Leg- islation now requires that school boards in Ontario set pay hikes to cover the next three years. Rev. McEntyre. is seeking re-election to the Durham Board of Education in November. Wilbur to run for area councillor Reach Township resident Marg Wilbur announced Monday that she will be a candidate for the area seat - on Scugog council when voters go to the polls Nov- ember 9. » MARG WILBUR Mrs. Wilbur, who has lived in the Township for the last 13 years, told the Star that her decision to make a bid for election to local office was based on the fact that she feels local governments need a strong voice in that municipal councils are "being pushed around" by other levels of government. The only other candidate to declare an interest in the store Special: 4, TIME ONLY! Don Crosier, the incumbent area councillor has announced he will be seeking the Regional seat this November. Mrs. Wilbur, married with three children, has long been an active supporter of the New Democratic Party, and has been campaign manager for NDP candidates in several federal and provincial elections. She was the NDP candidate for York Durham riding in the 1981 provincial elections. She is a member of the Ontario NDP provincial council and current chair- man of the council's municipal affairs committee. Mrs. Wilbur was a member of the Reach Protective Association several years ago, served a term as a rep on the Durham Federation of Agriculture and worked with the finance committee for the new Scugog Library. The area council rep is elected at large by all voters within Scugog Township, as opposed to the four Ward councillors who are elected only by the voters within their respective ward boundaries. They are being very wary and Mr. McTavish is con- vinced there are more wolfs and coyotes in the area. An animal which starts displaying aggressive behavious because of rabies usually dies within a few days, according to Dr. S. Sheare of the federal depart- ment of agriculture in Bow- manville. ~ Dr. Sheare investigated attacks on the dogs last week and ordered the quarantine. She said that symptoms of rabies may not start to show up for several months. In the case of the McTavish dog "Missy"' symptoms will likely show up this week because the dog was bitten around the face and head. Duncan McTavish comforts ""Missy'* who was viciously attacked recently by a rabid coyote in the western part of Scugog Township. "Missy" went into six month quarantine last week and Mr. McTavish is hoping the dog does not begin to show signs of rabies and have to be destroyed. [See story] Harvey Graham first toannounce for Ward 4 seat Harvey Graham, a well known farmer in Cartwright has announced that he will be a candidate for Ward 4 in the up-coming municipal elections on November 8. The Ward 4 seat is curr- ently held by John Wolters who announced last week that he will be seeking the area council seat this election. Mr. Graham, who is a life-long resident of Cart- wright, served as a trustee and chairman of the local . school board in the 1960s and prior to Regional Govern- ment, was twice elected to the council of the former Township of Cartwright. For more than 20.years he + operated a successful dairy farm on Shirley Road south- west of Blackstock. He sold the dairy herd a couple of years ago and now raises beef cattle and cash crops with his son Mark. Mr. Graham has been very active in agricultural organ- izations, helping to set up the Farm Labour Pool and . serving as chairman. He is currently a director of the Durham Federation of Agri- culture, a past president of the Ontario Guernsey Breeders Association and a past director of the Canadian Guernsey Association. He has been an active worker with the Blackstock Agricultura] Society and the colourful and humorous commentator for the Black- stock Tractor and Truck Pull. Acknowledging that there is no single issue dominating this municipal election, Mr. Graham said he has main- tained an interest in getting back into active politics over the past few years.
