$300 Donation Central Seven Association for the retarded were the recipients last week of a $300 cheque from Rick Geer. Mr. Geer is the president of the Ridge Runner Truck Club and is seen here presenting the cheque to Mr. Butch Latta, president of Central Seven Assoc. The club which comprises of 28 members from the Port Perry area, raised the money at the Port Perry Fair in the Dunk'em machine. Cottrell will challenge Drew for Ward 2 seat Port Perry dentist Dr. Jack Cottrell announced Monday morning that he will be seeking the Ward 2 (Port Perry) seat on Scugog Township council in the municipal elections set for November 8. DR. JACK COTTRELL Dr. Cottrell, 33, has lived in the-Township for the past eight years since he began work as a dentist here, and he has taken an active role in many aspects of community affairs. As of Monday, Dr. Cottrell and former Ward 2 councillor Richard Drew were the only candidates to announce that they would be running for the Ward 2 seat. The incumbent councillor for this ward, Robert Espey, has made no official ann- ouncement about his election plans for this November, other than a statement three weeks ago that he might consider running for the Regional seat on council. He defeated Mr. Drew in a close race for the seat two years ago. : Dr. Cottrell said his reasons for seeking office this year stem from his long time interest in local politics and he feels his work with a variety of associations and projects gites him a good background and understanding of the municipality. Like other candidates who have de- _clared their intention to seek election this fall, Dr. Cottrell acknowleges that there is no single dominant issue in front of the voters in Scugog. Dr. Cotttell has been a 'member of the Town Hall 1873 Board of Directors for the past four years. He is presently chairman of the Durham Ontario Dental Society, was a member of the board of directors of the Big Brother Association in Scugog and North Durham, and was chairman of the building committee for the new Scugog Library. Ward 2 takes in all of what used to be the Village of Port Perry prior to Regional government, but it does not include the hamlet of Prince Albert which is part of Ward 1. Vitis Se RH EE Building starts up in August Construction and building in Scugog Township during the month of August com- pared favourably with activity during the same month in 1981. The building permit report shows that last month a total of 26 permits were issued at a value of $3336,000. In August, 1981, the value was $596,000 for 28 permits. However, the report points that a year ago, one permit for the new Regional Works depot amounted to $300,000. Last month, there were five permits issued for new single family homes, an increase of one over the same period a year ago. For the entire year to date, the total number of building permits and the value are still lagging considerably behind when compared to the figure for the same period last year. To the end of August this year, the Township issued 186 permits (for construction of all kinds) with a value of $3.3 million. To the end of August last year, 290 permits had been issued for a value of just over $7 million. The major difference is in the number of permits for new single family homes. There have been 35 issued to date this year, compared with 97 to the end of August last year. The value differ- ence is more than $3 million. The slowdown this year in Scugog is showing up in almost all the municipalities in Durham Region, espec- ially the drop in the new home construction. However, in Scugog, it appears as if the building permit activity for 1982 is going to surpass the figures for 1980, which was the most dismal year on record for the municipality as far as new construction is concerned.
