In a Junior C contest Sun. night, MoJacks struck early for two quick goals, then shifted into neutral and limped away with a 5-5 draw against the Chiefs. | | | Showing good speed and tough forechecking, the Chiefs kept the MoJacks off balance through much of the game, even though it was Lakefield who had to scramble for a goal late in the match to knot the score at five each. Scott Wallace gave the MoJacks a 1-0 lead at the 2:44 mark of the first taking ~ LR PR A loose puck lies near the Lakefield crease as Mo Jack forward tries to get his stick on it. But Gord Davey made it 2-1 when he was left un- guarded to the right of Ken Harman at 17:28 as the Chiefs began to carry the play. In fact, they had the better of the scoring chances in the first period and out-shot MoJacks by a 15-10 margin. MoJacks Allan Engberg was off for holding at 13:52 of the second when Glenn Stevenson flipped a shot past Harman to tie the score. And Rodd Taylor gave the visit- ors the lead for the first time C contest last Sunday at Scugog Arena. After taking a 2-0 lead early in the game, MoJacks had to settle for a 5-5 draw. (Turntopage 13) at 15:10 of the middle frame. Chiefs had much the better of the play in this period and out-shot MoJacks 16-10. The visitors went up by two at the 51 second mark of the third as Gary Nelson drilled a quick shot from the point to make it 4-2. Midway through the period Tim Thompscn cut that to one goal when he muscled his way out of the corner and swept the puck past Bernard Crowley in the Chief net. Wallace drew an assist. The teams were playing five aside at 12:31 when John Fusco pulled MoJacks even. He snared a loose puck in the slot and beat Crowley with a shot along the ice. MoJacks Scott Dezan was off for roughing when Chief goalie Crowley cleared the puck right onto the stick of Thompson.in front of the net and he shovelled it home to give Port Perry a 54 lead with less than five minutes to play. Crowley was yanked in the final minute and it paid off as Glenn Stevenson tied the score with '48 seconds left in the match. Chiefs coach Paul Bedford showed he's a bit of a gambler as he again yanked Crowley with eight seconds left and a faceoff deep in the MoJack zone. That move almost back- fired as MoJacks cleared the puck to centre and nearly had a clear shot on the empty net as the final buzzer sound- ed. J Aside from a little rough stuff in the final period, the game was one of the cleanest Junior C matches at the Scugog Arena in a long time. Chiefs took four minors, while MoJacks were sent off for eight minor penalties. MoJacks were the victim of what looked like a quick whistle midway through the final period as Glen McKay knocked in a loose puck, but the referee ruled that the Chief goalie had the puck smothered. The game was a stark contrast to the home 'opener a week ago when MoJacks hammered in 13 goals against the Cobourg Cougars But the Chiefs played a much better brand of hockey than the Cougars, especially in their own end as they shut down the MoJack attack. Ken Harman faced 40 shots in the MoJack net while Crowley was tested 35 times, Harman had to make the more difficult stops. A very bright spot for the MoJacks in the third period was the penalty killing work of Scott Dezan .and Scott Wallace who came close on a couple of occasions to getting a short-handed goal. MoJacks record in this early season now stands at two wins, one loss and one tie for five points. Next home game for the team is this Sunday night when Port Hope Panthers visit the Scugog Arena with faceoff at 7:30. But this coming Friday night, the MoJacks face a stern test as they take on the Muskies in the 'Lindsay Arena. ~ Muskies have a tough team this year, much the 'same squad who knocked MoJacks out of the playoffs last year.
