December 28, 1982 Looking (From page 9) average of 6.4 per cent on January 1. DECEMBER 1982 Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor pledges fiscal restraint over the next three years as the new council was officially sworn into office at a ceremony in the municipal chambers. A fire in the early morning hours of November 30 completely destroyed a large barn on the south side of Concession 7 a mile east of the main Scugog Island Road. The large wooden barn was owned by Joseph Krajcik. Law partners Paul Fletcher and John McKay were found not guilty and cleared of fraud charges against them in a Toronto courtroom Friday. The cost to Scugog Township for the November 8 election was slightly less than $14,000. The largest single cost was for printing voters list, ballots and cards which came to $5,226. The Harrison Estate on Seven Mile Island has been sold for $630,000, but just who bought the uni- que property on Lake Scugog has not been disclosed. What was shaping up as a tense election bat- tle turned into a virtual coronation as Durham Region chairman Gary Herrema was acclaimed to the post for a three year term. The reason for the acclamation was the surprise announcement by Oshawa councillor John Aker that he was withdrawing from the race for Regional chairman. Three young Seagrave area men have been remanded in custody and will make an ap- pearance in Ajax Provincial Court on charges of attempted murder and robbery. With record temper- atures and a thunderstorm Christmas came in green. Hopefully this weather won't last much longer and all my readers will have a very Happy New Year. Blackstock was the scene of many Christmas concerts and services this past week. On Monday and Tuesday afternoons two different con- certs were performed at the Public School. The Senior Students performed on Mon- day and the Junior Students on Tuesday. On Wednesday evening Linda Bradburn, Superintendent of the Sun- day School, was in charge of the Sunday School Concert Candlelighting Service. The audience was entertained by a variety of skits, carols and musical numbers. Following the concert refreshments and a social time were pro- vided by the U.C.W. On Friday evening, the United Church was the setting for the Christmas Eve Carol Service. Reverend Dale Davis led the congregation in a variety of carols. Arlene Malcolm, Ken Crawford, Dale VanCamp and Peggy Larmer each gave very thought provoking reading on the Christmas Story. Both the Senior and Junior Choir sang several musical arrangements and a trio of Janice MacKenzie and daughters, Clare and Leslie captured the audience with their harmonious piece. So it is plain to be seen Blackstock "was alive with the sound of music" this week. The Senior Citizen Euchre Party was held on Tuesday at the Town hall with twelve A.A.
