January 25, 1983 Sports Pee Wee A's capture another tournament -- i" a This past week-end the Legion Pee Wee A's made it number five, when they de- feated Burlington, Leaside and Gravenhurst to win the Championship in the South Muskoka Minor Hockey Tournament. For the first game against Burlington on Sat. morning in Gravenhurst, Port played to a 4-3 victory. They out- played and outshot the opposition in the opening period but were unable to get a puck past a very alert goalie, Burlington took a 1-0 lead with less than a minute to play in the period. A power play goal by Warren Geer assisted by Brad Traves and John Lally had the score evened, again Burlington jumped ahead, but a scramble in front of the net assisting. The second period was a continuation of the first with Port outplaying their opponents but goals are not scored when you miss wide open nets. Penalties were more evident in this game with the close check- ing by both Clubs. Leaside " finally tied the game at the halfway point of this period. At the 7:40 mark of the third, Mike Sorley gave Port a 2-1 lead after taking a pass from Warren Geer. Super penalty killing and Ballingall playing sharp in net played a key role when Port were playing two short while Leaside went with six attackers. Traves returning to the ice fired one into an empty net. Leaside still going with six attackers scored with only 10 seconds left in the game. After the two previous close games the Champion- ship game proved an easy victory as our Legion Pee Wee A's whomped Graven- hurst 8-3. With only 2:33 played in the game Port were up by three goals with each line accounting for one. The first goal came at the 5:39 mark of the first period. The Uxbridge defence clear- ed the puck onto Jason Cochrane's stick and he was Bantams defeat Uxbridge to get home ice edge On Sunday, January 23rd, the Goreski Bantams travell- ed to Uxbridge to play their most important game of the year. This game would decide the home ice ad- vantage in the playoffs. Port opened up a quick 2 goal lead on goals by Greg Warriner assisted by Jeff Cockerton, and Jimmy White assisted by Dave Culbert and Steve Durham. Port Perry seemed to fall asleep as Uxbridge came back to tie it up and go ahead 3to2. Port then tied it upon a great rush by Greg Warriner. Uxbridge seemed to be getting stronger and they pulled ahead 4 to 3 but Jimmy White got that one back assisted by Steve Durham. Uxbridge pulled ahead by two goals by Craig Menzies brought Port to within 1 goal, assisted by Greg Warriner and Lee Wilbur. Port came out flying in the third period and quick- ly tied it up on a goal by Dave Burnett assisted by Lee Wilbur. Lee Wilbur scored the winning goal assisted by Steve Durham and Dave Culbert. The Auctioneers worked hard, keeping most of the play in the Uxbridge end throughout the second period. Shot after shot was blocked by the goalie or the defencemen and the period remained scoreless. Midway into the third, Uxbridge got a breakaway, but Shawn Larocque knock- ed it aside with his glove. Jason Cochrane carried the puck from his own end, past both Uxbridge defencemen, deked the goalie and scored his second goal of the night. The final goal by Duane Emperingham, assisted by Jeff Parry and Kevin Brown ended the game 3-0 for the Auctioneers. Shawn Larocque recorded his fsecond shut-out of the week on Friday night when the Auctioneers defeated Bowmanville 3-0. The Auctioneers played a fast moving style of hockey. Midway into the first period Jason Cochrane came up with the puck in Bowman- ville's end, made the pass to Stephen Laird who scored the first goal. The Auctioneers kept up the pace throughout the next period. Port had some good scoring chances but were unable to get it by the Bow- manville goalie. The final period saw a lot of end to end action, but Shawn Larocque made the saves to shut out Bowman- ville. At the 3:12 mark Jason Cochrane picked up a pass from Jody Logan. Cochrane let it go just inside the blue line and beat the goalie on the short side. A minute later, Jody Logan unassist- ed, deked the goalie on a breakaway to end the game. The Auctioneers were short- handed twice in the game but successfully killed off the penalties. Due to illness, Sean Mc Enany was missing from the line-up. Get well soon, Sean. This game ends the regular scheduled games of the season. The Auctioneers will now play exhibition games before entering the play-offs in February. of the game, Lally also pick- ed up an assist. Only one game was playea on Sat. morning therefore early Sunday morning we were off to Bracebridge this time for a 9 o'clock game against Leaside. This proved another thriller with Port coming through with a 3-2 win. As in their previous game Port outplayed their opposition but goal tending kept them off the scoreboard until the last five minutes of the opening period when Andrew Steele scored on a power play with Brad Menzies and John Lally by Wendy Skelly On Saturday, January 21, the Sportsland juniors hosted a strong Lindsay team. The girls regular season is start- ing to wind down and they knew they needed a strong finish. The Sportsland juniors went out on the ice with great determination to win. They started off slow by being wn by 1 goal at the end of the first period. But put everything together in the second and scored five goals. Connors started the scoring from Leatherdale and Traves, John Lally from Barkey and Brown made it 2-0 then Brad Menzies from Geer and Steele. Brad Menzies from John Lally on a power play, Mark Barkey assisted by Lally and Traves accounted for the two goals in the second period. Both teams picked up numerous penalties plus three goals in the last period. Lally scored his second of the game while Brad Menzies picked up a hat trick goal, Mike Sorley added the final marker, assists went to Geer with two, Traves, Nanay and Menzies each with one. Warren Geer was chosen M.V.P. Brad Traves as captain accepted the trophy on behalf of the team, all team players received individual trophies. Don't forget our home tournament this coming Sat. (Jan.29th), come out and support the Legion Pee Wee A's and Minor Hockey. Juniors whip Lindsay The final score was Sports- land juniors 8 and Lindsay 3. Scoring for the Port Perry team was Heather Muir 4 goals, Joanne Connors 2 goals, Kelly Storry 1 goal, and Cheri Coakwell 1 goal. Assists going to Dawn Park 2, Kelly Storry 1, Tracey Staniland 1, and Cheri Coak- well 1. Every member of the team played a great game. Our next game is Wednesday at 8:00 in Mariposa.
