Durham York NDP members discussed NDP alternatives to wage controls. The NDP is opposing the Tory wage legislation because it is bad economics and terribly unfair. Research in- dicates that not one job has been created by the Tory plan to control wages. At a time of still declining demand, further cuts in pur- chasing power in the economy will only worsen the layoff spiral. The NDP members looked at the alternative economic program pro- posed by the NDP. This included job creation, particularly in the housing sector, through energy conservation programs, and by stimulating local economics through accelerated public works. In the private sector, there could be new jobs in food proc- cessing, machinery manufacturing. The NDP proposes an interest rate relief pro- gram, a surtax on bank profits.
