" y ¢ TINA SIRF ERE CR SERINE 4 SE SER by Joyce Kelly On Thursday a fine number of directors, their spouses and other friends of the Black- stock Agricultural Society attended the annual banquet and meeting at the Rec- reation Centre. Follow- ing the roast beef dinner served by the O.N.O. President Bob Swain thanked all those who had worked so hard to create such successful Blackstock Fair in spite of horrible weather. Our many trophies were then presented. The Holstein trophies were presented as follows - The Malmont Farms trophy for the Best Holstein Herd was presented by Jennifer Malcolm to Jamie Malcolm, the Neil Mc- Laughlin Trophy for Best Junior Holstein was presented by Jean Mahaffy to Frank Barkey and Doug Wherry presented his trophy for the Champion Holstein Cow to Jamie Malcolm of Malmont Farms. The following Guernsey Trophies were presented. John Larmer presented the Fair Board trophy to Kent Baird representing his father Hugh Baird for the Best Guernsey herd, Doug Wherry's trophy for the Best Guersney Cow had been won by Robert Holliday and Ralph Larmer and Sons had won the Brian Hamilton Trophy for the Best Junior Guernsey. The Field Crop Trophy for the winner in the competition which this year was in barley. Chairman Lawrence McLaughlin presented it to the winner Jim Byers. Jack Green pre- sented the certificate for Funks Corn also to Jim. Merrill and Aileen Van Camp gave a fine slide show of this years fair with slides taken by - Bob and Marie Atfield. It gave the hard-work- ing directors a chance to see much of the ac- tivities-that- they.-don't. have an opportunity to see on Fair Day. Committee Chairmen all gave reports that indicated they had all been very busy. 'Anyone wishing to attend the annual Con- vention in Toronto on Feb.16 is to contact either Ken or Joyce. Guest speaker for the evening was Ingrid Larmer who gave an excellent talk on her ideas about fairs. She pointed out one of the strong points is the great enthusiasm all directors possess. This strong trait is found in all fairs. One of the main objectives of fairs is to tell the agricultural story which in todays society needs to be told more effectively now than ever. She stressed the importance of exhibitors to any fair. Ingrid gave many practical ideas on how to improve our or any fair. She concluded her speech with a review of the Grant set-up for C. and B Fairs. In conclusion Ingrid stressed that any changes must satisfy ourselves, our exhib- itors, our visitors, and our banker. Gerald Kelly express- ed the meetings appreciation to Ingrid for her informative talk. New President Ken Crawford added his word of appreciation and concluded the meet- ing with hopes of another successful year. The Board of Direct- ors of the Pine Ridge Garden Club met at the home of the President, John Kingstone. The pro- gramme looks very interesting. The first meeting will be held on the first Tuesday of 'March inthe Nestleton Hall at 8 p.m. This years programmes will include workshops on dried flowers, decorat- ing, silk flower arrange- ments, pine cone Christmas decorating, place mats with pressed flowers as well as various special speakers. Our local curlers have been attending various Bonspiels. On Tuesday, Doris Clarke, Nancy McConnell. Kathy Mc- Laughlin and Ruby Van Camp took part in the Marg Tripp Bonspiel in Port Perry. On Wed- nesday, Elaine Bailey, Lorna Edgerton, Jean Mahaffy, Helen Nesbitt, Mary DeMerchant, Sharon Wilson, Doris Clarke and Jackie Beddome were at a Bon- spiel in Bowmanville while on Saturday Howard Bailey, John and Marilyn Green, Elizabeth and Eleanor Kelly, Norma Jean Newbold, Andrew andPetrie and Craig Paisley were at the Newmarket Youth Bon- spiel. Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Hoskin were Mr. and Mrs. Wes Wood, Mr. Ralph Wood, Orono, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Wood, Kendall. Sunday evening callers were Mr. and Mrs. Allyn Hoskin and Miss Sherri Hoskin, Bowmanville. Men and women from ~ Blackstock and area are needed to assist in the Community Care's Ser- vices to the elderly and those in special need. If you have time to help people from our area occasionally with Meals on Wheels or to drive to the Foot Care Clinic, Doctors or Physio- therapy appointments or to local shopping, call the co-ordinator Eliz- abeth Fulford at 985- 8461 on weekdays.
