Shawn Larocque earned a shut-out in this game. Both teams came out skating and checking well, resulting in a scoreless first period. Early in the second, Jason Cochrane passed the puck to Jason McBride in the slot and the Auctioneers were away. With thirty-four seconds left, the Auc- tioneers scored again. Jeff Parry put away the second marker assisted by Kevin Brown and Jody Logan. Pickering fought back to hold off the Auc- tioneers. With 1:50 left in regulation time, Picker- ing pulled their goalie in favour of an extra player but the Auctioneers held them off. With ten seconds to play, Jason Cochrane assisted by Gavin Cochrane drilled one into the open net. The game ended 3-0 in favour of the Auctioneers. Shawn Larocque was ably backed up by the defence team of Brad Moase, Gavin Cochrane, Jeff Andrews and Mike Sluggett. On Sat. Feb. 5, the Auctioneers entered the Bowmanville Novice Tournament. Jason Cochrane got a breakaway and beat the goalie for Port's second marker. On the third one, Brad Moase scored from the point assisted by Mike Sluggitt. Bowmanville put on the pressure but Shawn Larocque stood solidly between the pipes and the second period re- mained scoreless. The Auctioneers pick- ed up their fourth marker midway into the third. Kevin Brown tip- ped this one into the net assisted by Sean McEnany and Duane Empringham. Sean earned the shut- out with a final score of 4-0 in favour of the Auctioneers. This win put the Auc- tioneers into the Semi- Championship round against the Oshawa Black Hawks. This prov- ed to be the most exciting game of the day. Both teams played a very fast moving style of hockey and neither team could get the edge thus resulting in a scoreless first and second period. Finally at the 3:53 mark of the final period, the Black Hawks scored on a power play against the short-handed Auc- tioneers. Port fought back hard and at the 1:43 mark Duane Empr- ingham assisted by Jeff Parry tied up the game. Port picked up a tripping penalty with a minute left in regulation time but was able to hang on- to tHe tie. The game went into sudden death played with no goaltenders. The Auctioneers penalty car- ried over into the over- time which gave the Black Hawks the advan- tage. Within seconds, the Black Hawks scored into the open net to defeat the Auctioneers 2-1. All the Auctioneers played extremely well and can be proud of their efforts. ps NET ONT gy ho at at APARNA A SHE Ih] fy dd er TS % RAR PY x \ id SRR INR GLE vg © Y eg t FA CHa F BORER WT PET BRASOSE TT FRETS wv, The annual open "Farmers Bons - | 2! 3 LE CARE SNES ENG SP ER SERA POR Pe Li 3 o ALAA ' Cie 'eps TATA IM LEA" (PL) EFAS RA ES SATE To EEF SL ROG S BAA » ee AE ud POY, yi, oy 41 of IR. Mike Toye who hustled in the corners all game long gave the puck to point man. Robbie Jamieson who in turn passed to Kevin Gibson who put the puck home. The Ux- bridge team was game but Port was just two powerful for them and from the first period on, the game was never in doubt. The two teams meet again Monday night at 7:30 p.m. in Port Perry. Come out and support the boys on' their road to the 'All Ontario". Once again Port Perry came within a hair of victory at a tour- nament only to see it slip through their fingers. It happened not once but twice this past weekend in Little Britain. Port Perry and Little Britain opened the tour- ney with an 8:00 a.m. game on Saturday. These two teams have been carrying on a friendly rivalry since the beginning of the year. Port has lost every meeting so far but never by more than one goal. Unfortunately history repeated itself Saturday and Port lost 2-1. In actual fact the game was tied but because of a contro- versial rule awarding the game in case of a tie, to the team scoring the first goal, Port had to pull their goalie in the dying seconds of the game. Little Britain got their go ahead goal, in an empty net. These two teams have provided fans with some of the best hockey we've seen this year. Jamie Menzies picked up the lone goal for Port Perry. Jamie got a great shot away on a perfect pass from the corner from piel" . ment trophy. Arnold Kerry presented the winning skip with the hardware, along with team mates Terry Howsam, Brad Howsam and Keith Sweetman. opener Keith Roberge. The goalie didn't stand a chance as Jamie took the pass and shot all in one motion. Port Perry's second game of the day was a different story. Port soundly defeated their opposition Bobcaygeon by a 4-1 score. Every member of the team was up for this one and coaches Obee Christie and Fitzgerald got a solid effort from all three lines and five defenseman. Kevin Gib- son opened the scoring assisted by Derek Fitz- gerald and Jim Vernon. Jamie Menzies got the next goal after a tic-tac- toe passing play between Jamie, Ian Smith and Keith Roberge on a power play. On Port's third goal Jeff Oke took a pass from Davis Watts and put the puck by the Bobcaygeon goalie. Port's last goal was an unassisted effort from Ian Smith. The victory qualified Port to take part in the battle for the consolation champion- ship. Thus the stage was set for one of the most ridiculous games the fans have witnessed in some time. Because they've lost so many close calls in recent tournaments the boys were determined to make a good showing for themselves. In spite of losing 3-0 to a fine hockey team from Ernestown the Stones did just that. The refereeing was terrible and that's putting it mildly. Port Perry was called for 14 minutes in penalties to none for Ernestown - until the last two minutes of the game when the match was out of reach. Accor- ding to fans on both sides it looked like the two penalties were thrown in at the end to make it look good on the game sheet. Its too bad that the two teams were not allowed to play hockey because it might have made for a good game. The fans beef was not that the penalties were called but that none were called on the other side. In spite of playing a great deal of the game 1 or 2 men short, the Stones played well and are to be congratulated on a great tournament. The Stones next and final tourney of the year takes place Easter week end in Buffalo. Players and parents alike are looking forward to this one, it should prove to be a great experience for the boys.
