Animated is a word too mild to describe this lady's face. Every pore is lit with a smile that goes on and on. It's ob- viously a subject she believes in. "I enjoy so much what I'm doing in a volunteer way," she says, with em- phasis placed on volunteer. "Living in a community and feeling a part of it is also like giv- ing a part of yourself. And in Port Perry, it's easy to have a sense of belonging. "We've just got so much going for us." And Kent Farndale by the looks of things, has a lot going for her. She's a petite, elegant woman with a fascination for all things artistic. Her own home is sprinkled with a collection of works from artists of varied backgrounds, including a few pieces done by her opening of the library last May and has featured many local ar- tists including Lawrence Davis, the creator of bird carvings; Sheila Dant- zer, with mixed media; and Les Parkes, a water- colour artist. It's up to Kent to find artists who husband Doug. are interested in showing '""He's a dabbler," she their art in Port Perry, says. book them, and even ar- Her deep-rooted in- terest in art is the main reason Kent became a volunteer in the first place. She works on the Library Arts Committee, a group responsible for the different art shows continually appearing at the Scugog Public Library. The program was started shortly after the DECLARATION NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK Whereas Volunteers are individuals who give freely of themselves out of concern and belief that we all share the respongibility for others in our community and; Whereas Volunteers truly care and share generously of themselves and their resources and; 'Whereas citizen participation is of great benefit in building a better community and; ; Whereas most of us are in some way or another volunteers, either formally or informally, maybe by helping a neighbour, being on a church com- mittee, coaching amateur sports, helping senior citizens, hospital patients, delivery Meals on Wheels, or helping at the Museum, or assisting disabled people. Therefore be it resolved that: The Township of Scugog and Social Service Agen- | "cies that use Volunteers would like to honour and thank the dedicated citizens of the Township of Scugog who generously apply their valuable time, energy and abilities to a variety of community tasks by having the week of April 17 - 23, 1983 declared "National Volunteer Week." D. JEROME TAYLOR, MAYOR range or hang the pieces in the gallery. She gets help with the latter from library employee Marilyn Wallace. "It's definitely a joint effort," she says. While the committee takes up much of her time, it isn't the only endeavour she volunteers for. Since 1975 she has been involved with Town Hall 1873. In the beginning, she struggled to help save the historical building from a parking lot fate. Once the battle was won, she stayed around to do _publicity for the hall and the concerts which have played in it. "It's a gorgeous, in- timate theatre," she says. "It has been really great, so nice to see these artists without leaving Port Perry." On a completely dif- ferent note, Kent does volunteer work for her church, where she is the clerk of session. She's also a member of the United Church Women, helps with publicity for the hospital expansion completed a three-year term on the Parent Ad- visory Committee of _R.H. Cornish Public School.
