by Margaret VanCamp ° Synthesis, Tom Millar's musical brain- child, was performed to exuberant sell-out crowds April 8 and 9 at Town Hall 1873, Port Perry. Synthesis is "the combination of separate parts into a complex whole' and one of Tom's important con- tributions to the musical extravaganza was his accompaniment on the 'synthesizer - '"'a machine that recon- structs a given sound by recreating and combin- ing its component frequencies." And what a musical feast! Tom Millar in conjunction with the vocal octet "Sounds Great" under the cap- able leadership of Jim Ashley, presented a "one of the best ever" Subscription Series shows in Port Perry with the superb direc- tion of Diane Lackie, producer. The playing, singing, staging, cost- uming, lighting all deserve an Academy Award. Fame, the opening number, set the dynamic mood for the evening. The singers,, scattered throughout the aucience, collected on stage to the rhythmic and tonal beat of the synthesizer. Then, the mood quief- |, ed as Catherine Millar lyrically and sensitively sang three songs: Kiss - Me In the Rain, Memory (from the Broadway hit, '"'Cats"), and Songbird. three well-aranged John Denver songs followed: Perhaps Love, a duet well-sung by soloist Norm Kitney and Jim Stevenson, Annie's Song and Sunshine on my Shoulders. Call Me Irrespon- sible! obviously one of the choir's favourites, it began with an interest- ing and original choral lead into the rhythmic body of the piece. Then soft blue lights filtered on the octet's faces as the group softly swung into Duke Ellington's Mood Indigo. The con- trolled, sustained sing- ing here intensified as the music climbed to the climax. Superbly sung. Then, the moment we had all been waiting for! Tom's playing of Rhapsody in Blue was unfortunately interrupt- ed here as his medical skills took precedence - to deliver. a baby - Grand! Tom's playing of the showpiece by Gershwin, who had re- volutionized jazz with this composition, received a standing ovation which it justly deserved.
