Following hours of tortuous indecision, reading and re-reading, head-shaking and arguing, the Port Perry Star's mystery judge came through with a winner - the winner of the infamous first- annual Best Boss contest. 'We happen to be very fortunate to have two bosses. Now some may think that would mean double trouble, but it doesn't" the winning letter began. "When one thinks of a boss we conjure up in our mind someone who is aloof, well, such is not the case with our bosses. "They always work right along with their employees, they ask us our opinions about de- tails concerning bus- iness (which they don't always heed) and join in the camaraderie of coffee breaks. They are most generous in arranging our work schedules to accomm- odate our schooling and families. "Now these two people sound like the perfect bosses! Well, they're not! They have their days of ranting and raving and forgett- ing to inform employees of changes just like all other bosses, but we at Dowson's Red. and White feel very fort- unate in having two bosses. Thanks Ken Dowson and Don Gibson for being two great bosses, but most of all for being two wonderful friends." So there you have it, folks. The double winners will be lunching at the Star's expense, enjoying their newfound Best Bossdom. Picking the winning letter from the many entries received was a tough decision. Some employees waxed poetic: "Our boss is best we know by far, at taxes and figures he's a star. He never pushes us to the limit, and serves us coffee with sugar in it. There's just one thing that makes us jest, he likes country and western music best." Some were filled with love: A Pharmacist who does his part of giving all his heart in serving his community to people of all ages'. Others were funny: "Most bosses get up- set if they catch you looking out the window. Ours join us." '"We have a very special boss, he's never mean and never cross. Some days he might not feel so great, but still he doesn't get irate. He'll make the coffee if we're busy (that would throw some bosses into a tizzy). He watches the kids (while his lunch gets cold) and some- times he may have to scold. But even while on the bench kids wait, their fear is not so very great. Our boss 'runs a school', you may have guessed and we think he is the very best!" One letter-writer admitted to being in a real quandry..."I have three and they're all PERFECT 10's..." And then there's the boss who knows the surest way to a girl's heart is through her stomach: "He buys us special treats; doughnuts, cookies and all the good things us girls say 'I shouldn't eat this' but we always do. He says, 'They're non-calorie". There were the sincere letters: "A boss is a friend first, a good listener and someone who pssesses the humor, warmth and understanding ~~ which can help get you through the worst day." And there were the legal letters: 'As legal secretaries, we are aware of the fact that one must be cautious about putting things in writing, but nevertheless, we would not want to miss the opportunity of letting our boss know why we think he's the Best Boss in town...Notwithstand- ing the foregoing, we trust the above will have no bearing on our future negotiating positions. Something nearly all the entries had in common was a refer- ence to the bosses making coffee for the employees. This phenomenon must date back a few years ago when a Toronto secre- tary refused to make coffee for her boss and found herself in the line of "fire. Literally. 'By the sound of the letters, local bosses are more liberal than that. Not only are they free with their coffee, they are also free with a list- ening ear, good advice and flowers during Secretaries Week (which is this week, by the way. Have a happy one!). Without further adieu, meet the Best Bosses, as nominated by their: employees, in all of Scugog Township: Ken Dowson and Don Gib- son, Michael Fowler, Earl Cuddie, Peter Hvidsten, Dr. Helen Ottenbrite, Roger Moase, James Duncan, Frank Murphy, Butch Latta, Roden Rutledge, Carolyn and i toy Luke, Don Forder, Dr Hardy, Dr. Cottrell, Chuck Dewhirst, Jim Lawrence and Dave Muir. Congratulations! Meet the winners of the Star's Best Boss contest. The employees of Dowson's Red and White food store (all 22 pictured) unanimously decided Ken Dowson (centre, left) and Don Gibson (centre, right) were great bosses.
